Steptoe, unfortunately I don't have good news - YET!

I have tried the tool, but it didn't work. At first I made sum changes to see if I could get it to work, but eventually did the shims by loosening the cams. I made it exactly like you indicated, but it is incomplete. I have a donor engine which I will use to see if I could get it to work, and then I will let you know what I did.

I am doing another bike tonight, but I am pressed for time, so I will just do it by loosening the cams again. I do it this way:- I measure all the existing gaps, and note them. I then work out how much I must adjust the gaps by. At this stage I dont know what number shim is in. I turn the engine to where the lobes are depressing the valves the least, and then loosen that cam. By tilting the cam, I remove each shim, check the number, look in the book what is the correct number shim based on the amount of adjustment calculated. Place the replacement shim on the bucket. Do all of them under that cam complete, them bolt the cam down again. Do a quick cam allignment check to ensure nothing moved, then move on the the next cam. Again do the same. At the end rotate the engine a few times, and recheck. Lastly do the cam chain tension adjustment.

Hope I didn't bore anyone... :)

let us  know how you go with it ---PLEASE---

I'd hate to think I've been boasting how good it is if I'm the only person to have built and tried it,,

it does work well though  ;D ;D , the shims come out from the other side of the cam to the bucket holder

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,  let it work :o :o :P 8)

It is impossible for me to do a direct comparison, as I have never been in your neck of the woods. South Africa is generally hot all year round. Like today, in the middel of winter, and it is about 25 deg C now. Bike weather all year round... ;D

To be honest I have never compared different plug ranges on the Yammie. When my dad bought his bike back in '78, the dealer told him to run a BP8ES, and that is what we have been doing ever since. The one bike I am doing now ('80 G) was fitted with BP6ES as per the book, but I replaced them last night with 8's. I only rode the bike a short distance before servicing it, and it wasn't running properly, but I think due to the carburetors. :-\  Hope to have it complete soon! ;)

Steptoe, I made a shim tool like yours today at work, will be trying it over the week-end!

I use the cooler BP8's,  with wiseco pistons, ported head and dynacoils, at cruise speed around 100 - 110 KPH, the engine runs around 20 deg C hotter than my previous stock engine setup,  found that out by running a car water temp gauge siliconed between the fins.   The stock engine used to sit on a consistent 100 - 110 deg C, (less in winter,  more in summer) The hotted engine is literally hotter,  always sits on around 130 deg C at a normal cruise compared,  but wind up the engine (stock or hotted) to 6000 or over for more than a few minutes and the needle on the gauge soon gets pinned at 160 deg +, even with all that extra airflow at high speeds.  Also if you let the XS11 engine sit on idle for more than 4 or 5 minutes,  the needle quickly gets pinned at over 160 deg too.(not jetted lean either)  And that's running an oil-cooler as well

with the hotter atmospheric conditions you run colder plugs so as not to cook/overheat internals

same as if we lived in the outback here,, I worked the west side of Emerald in C.Q for a while and ran colder plugs over summer

Hi Eric,
How does the bike run with the 8's fitted?
ive tried running  5, 6 and 7's and the colder the plug got,
the acceleration became smoother but flatter.
Have you run hotter plugs to compare?

I tried running the 5's and they caused the engine

you couldnt try them and see how they go.

As for a towbar - Give classic trailers at Yandina QLD. a try, if you have to buy one they'd probably be one of your best chances to get a certified one though some do look a bit flimsy to me.
