I had a call from Terry at Redline yesterday to say that the bike's ready for me.  He's on the other side of town, so I'll try and knock off early one day this week to head down there.

Terry was pretty happy with the job, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it's turned out. Will put a pic or two up for sure.

Edgey... I wonder, have you collected your bike yet?

Would love to see a pic of the result if you get the chance to post one.

Cheers

Hi Jarrod take the pipe off and down to see Terry at

8 Coongie Ave
Edwardstown

Ive been to Terry many times good work and fair price, Brian.

Latest update....I dropped the bike off to Terry today.  He seems like a top bloke - really knows his stuff, loves the old bikes and (thankfully) let me know that the damage wasn't too bad, so it's definitely worth fixing.  He's going to do a couple of little patches and I'll pick her up in a few days.

Thanks for the referral Coops.

Stories I've heard suggest that original pipes generally kacked it between 15k and 20k kms.

Mine are original, but amongst the paperwork I have a receipt for the supply and fit of a 4-1. The originals must have hung in a shed  for 20 yrs.

They ought to give us all a brandnew original exhaust for free, bet they are having the laugh of their lives...  :'(

1977 in Nippon: Com`on guys, lets fvck a bit with them all, i`ve just got the greatest idea...We`ll build them an everlasting motorcycle of the strongest materials we can find, but make the exhaust of nicely chromed old beercans, that should put a couple of grey hairs on their heads in 30-40 years when they realise we`ve pulled the plug on replacements years before....MUAHAHAHA!!!  ;D

It is probably a little known fact that the Yamaha company were replacing mufflers on a pro rata age basis due to them rusting out very quickly on XS1100's when they were near new

Gotta love the irony Jonesy - after sending you those pics

Mate I was thinking exactly the same thing.

$$-wise. If you take  the muffler off, and take it to someone for repair.  I think a tradesman is being charged out at around $60-70 an hour. and any well equipped shop should have this repaired inside an hour from the drop of the flag.

I've been out of the game for a while so someone more up to date might be able to give you a better estimate

Hey Jonesy and Dale,

Thanks for the advice guys.  I've made a few calls locally and will have a look at at the repair option for now. The guy at Yamaha Retro Spares is a fan of the old bikes and always seems pretty helpful, so I'll head down there when I can.

I'm in Adelaide, so Dandenong's a fair hike Dale but thanks for the generous offer to help out.  I'll hopefully be getting the bike over your way for a tour of Vic and Tas with the wife sometime.

Gotta love the irony Jonesy - after sending you those pics, I could end up needing to order one of the replicas you're having made up!  Hopefully I'll be able to get a fairly neat patch - I'd hate to part with the original pipes unless I really have to.  I've had a quick tap around as suggested and it doesn't seem too rusty.  I think the dented section might just be a weak point where all the dirt and water gathers.

Any ballpark thoughts on what the repair job should cost, just so I don't get hoodwinked?

Cheers,

Jarrad

Hey Jarrad
I see the pic now but I cant see the hole, its still unclear as to wether its rusted through? or worn through from the axle hitting it?

I would still go with the first repair method I mentioned.

If the hole is worn through you might need to mount the muffler in a way that increases clearance of the axle

Hey Jarrad,
Thats a real bummer mate,
Your pic didnt come through
Dont want to put a downer on it but that is probably the tip of the rusty iceberg, have a tap around (lightly) with something metallic. You'll get a feel after a bit of how far the rust has spread.

Ask around for a reputable engineering/fabricating shop and have them lay a stainless patch over the area with a TIG welder.

The repair will have good integrity. Last for ages but those lines will be blemished, maybe a local bike shop could put you onto some one?

Help! Hole in the ehxhaust pipe...
« Reply #1 on: August 07, 2011, 08:10:10 PM »
Hi All,

Today's Sunday ride came with an unwanted surprise - a hole in my exhaust pipe (1980 standard with original pipes).  Gutted.

Seeing as my mechanical 'expertise' is pretty basic, all advice about what do to is very welcome.

I'd been away for work the past couple of weeks so hadn't been on the bike for a fortnight or so.  Started first go as always but sounded just a bit 'off' compared to normal.  A little while down the road the power just felt a bit 'flat' - almost like the choke was on. It still rode pretty well, but not quite the same as it normally does. When I pulled over I noticed just a little hole (around 1/4 of a 5c piece size) on the top of my left-hand side pipe, in the part where it's dented down.

(Here's a pic to show where the hole is.  I'll get a better one ASAP.)

Is this fixable?  Any ideas on what the best thing to do is?  Would this hole explain the 'flat' feeling on the ride, or is that likely to be something else?  The bike's in pretty good condition overall and I want to keep things original as much as I can.

Cheers,

Jarrad
