hi rockman,
with regards to the oil pump, just crank the engine without starting
it, not sure of the model bike u have, but id remove the spark plugs
place the ignition wire caps back on the plugs and rest them on the head like u would
if u were checking for a spark, crank the engine over in bursts
if u have enuff oil pressure the oil light will go out.

not to sure bout the washer tho its been ages since ive been into the engine.

Thanks Peter. I'll just have to try it and see.
cheers, Phil

I've just about got my XS1100 back together after the 2nd gear fix. Couple of problems someone might be able to help me with

Firstly - I have a washer left over and I have an idea it went behind the idler gear that drives the oil pump. The one that fits on the end of the shifter fork shaft. Can anyone confirm if there is meant to be a washer there before I go to the trouble of pulling the clutch off again etc? Cant see it in any of the manuals I have.

Secondly - I didnt prime the oil pump. Didnt know I had to until I read the manual again trying to find out about the washer! Is there any way of priming the oil pump other than removing the sump and taking off the oil pump? I did think of overfilling it with oil so that the pump was submerged and cranking it over with the starter motor to see if it would pick up the oil, then draining it down to the right level after. Any other suggestions?
Phil
