or-------------------------------------you could leave the old girl as is, learn to appreciate the machine {sorry,,person ;D} as it has stood for 30 yrs,,   the handling in the twisties,, the flat out raw power off a line in a hurry,, the rolling cruise with "that" whine-----my personal favourite,, coming from the gearing,, and the plain old enjoyment of tinkering, ;)

Well, Eveready my main problem is where to start. I prowl all the websites looking for modifications, availability of parts etc. The main thing I noticed is that finding the original fairing and handlebars for the RH is a pipe dream so then what do I do to it to make it mine. Also its running but I like to ensure I have no nasty surprises so I,ll have to check compression etc and probably pull it apart to find out what I need to replace. And to be honest I don,t find parts support for these bikes to be screaming out. My local Yamaha dealer was unsure what oversize pistons he could get but if I could find what parts are interchangeable with the XS I'll start amassing parts for a rebuild.
As for pics, it looks no different from when Fungy and Carsten had it so I'll wait until I change something.

Cheers,
Charlie

Hey Charlie, We're waiting to hear of your "problems', mate.
...................or just more pics..................................
I can understand your problem,. I had an '83 GPZ750 that went like a cut snake, but when you wanted to go for a quiet cruise, two up, thru the hills, you still had to ride it like a cut snake.
These bikes are a mile apart from them. They'll take it gently, like you're taking a new pillion through the most treacherous stretch of road on the map but with really nice scenery to keep them captivated with the environment that you play in, to going wild, hitting the red though all shifts to top on the most obscure roads on you're favourite hangout.
I, for one, can't see a viable new age replacement for my trusty steed.

Welcome to the forum Charlie.
I'm only a 'newbie' to the XS scene myself and the guys here have been brilliant already.  I'm in Tassie next week for work...can't wait to ride from Adelaide to Melbourne and then take the ferry over one day.  I hear that the roads are unreal for bikes.
Cheers,

Welcome to the clan, Charlie. Congrats on the purchase of one of the best all round bikes I can think of to go for
A: for a fast blast thru your favourite mountain twisties,
or B ; a lazy cruise two up also thru your favourite mountain twisties with mountain views for your other half to enjoy. I found the characteristics of the motor were perfect for either scenario and haven't looked back since getting mine, some 280,000 klms ago.
Looking forward to seeing some pics of yourself and your ride.

Welcome Chuck , great to hear from you and see (post a pic of the bike  when you can) another active rider/member to our forum. Most anything about your bike can be found or answered on here so don t be shy if you have a problem .Sure beats spending hours of hair pulling trying to nut it out on your own if it s a tricky one.

Hi all,

I,m Charlie from Launceston only recently bought my first XS from Carsten.  Never rode them in their time and when I came back to bikes in 90s bought an SR500 just to get to work and ride around the Adelaide Hills. They became an obsession and multiplied. Only problem not too good on the Doom or any other long straight road, so I bought a 600 Bandit which was fun to ride but no character and couldn't cope with 2 up. So now I've found the mighty XS and although I was thinking of putting a sidecar on it I may have to get another one as the 81RH has got a lot of character and I didn't notice it as being such monster as the old reviews use to state.
Anyway glad to have joined the forum which looks great and hope I can pick some brains when I look into the heart of the Beast.

Cheers
Charlie
