well u learn something everday
i didnt know the 3x1 ran 132.5 mains,
i thought they all ran 137.5
is that right brian ur running 132.5?

yeah eveready i think they are the later model carbs
in the link bryan posted the only difference i could find in the
carbs was the slide needle, which are a  bugger to read at the best of times.

I'm still pretty much a rookie as far as identifying carby bits goes, especially compared to our local guru "The Steptoe", but if it helps at all, Max's carbs were really shiny and clean, had tin caps up top, not alloy, but had carb bowls with the drain tubes like on Steptoes Rh on them, so would I be correct in assuming they are the later model carbs??

sounds like the later model ones,
also when u have them off, check ur float heights
and have them set at 23mm,
they may have been set to the early model carb specs,
if u can get hold of free jets grab both 115 and the 120's
i know steptoe and eveready will be more than helpful and
they know there stuff.

the link bryan posted if u check the number on the slide needle
that should help id which 80 model carb u have.

the bike will go like a rocket once u get that all sorted out.

mixture screws are hiddin, or i should say they were, i cut of 10mm of alloy off to expose the screw heads, easies to get at, no plugs over pilot jets, the carbs your describing sound like my brother's carbs, and they are off a 79 we know that for sure, yeah steptoe and eveready both had a look at them, will try some 120's tomoro, steptoe has asked me to go to his place sat arve to have a look, will keep you posted, thanks again, when i work out how to put pics off my phone i will.. ???

can u take a pic of the carbs?

the early model carbs had the 137.5 and the later ones had 110

does ur carbs have vent tubes at the top?
and exposed mixture screws?  there the early model ones.

problem with sum of the 80 model carbs were that they were a bitsa carb
using both early and later model bits and pieces,

when u had them apart was the pilot jet tower have plugs over the top of them?

didnt steptoe have a look at ur bike
he would kno what type of carbs u have fitted

Thanks for the offer Peter but bundy bike wreckers have a large stock of 2nd hand jets, i've known the owner since i was 14 so their free to me, i was mistaken with the size of jets i put in, thought i put the big ones in but i had put132.5 in, so when i put 137.5 in it ran worse, so looks like i'v got to go smaller than 132.5
not sure what model engine i'v got, not the original, starts with 3x1, carbs have tin tops, i have carbs off a 1980 std, they have alloy tops, original engine for bike, it has 132.5 jets, my brother tells me he has 120's they came out of my carbs before i started building my bike so thats where i'm heading, so many differences between the different models, I'll get there eventually!!! thanks again..

yeah thanks again Peter, the 2 workshop manuals i've got only state 137.5 for some models and 147 for 1 other, havn't got the books in front of me so can't tell you wich one's, 110, 115, and 120's arn't mentioned at all in my books, sound a bit small to me but you never know hey,  i've just got back from our local wrecker's, with some 137.5's,  gunna cool down a bit then i'll go play with it, gunna try running it out of fuel first to see how it runs when it's bowls get a bit low on fuel that should indicate wether it's an over fuel problem, plugs still look good color tho, will let you know how i go..

hey makzy,
i havent got the standard model, but from working on my carbs i couldnt
go any bigger than 2 sizes from the stock setting without it playing up,
my bike came stock with 110 main jets, after i fitted pod filters and using a fairly open exhaust system, i ran
115 main jets that worked well, when i tried running 117.5 i had a small miss at around
5-6000rpm and when i went to 120 i had a miss at around 3000rpm, also the mid range
was soggy.
if ur running a stock air filter, id try running the stock jets, if u have a free flowing
air filter (k&n) then try running 142.5. and see how u go, this will also help ur mid range.

yeah Peter i'm thinkin that myself, the jets came out of my brothers bike and he had troubles too, but not what i'm havin, he went back 137.5, I have a set off carbs from a 80 std, so i'll have a look at them after i soak the carbs for a while cos they've been sittin in the weather for 10 yrs, when i get them apart i'll see what's in them and go form there, anybody know what the thud or thump might be in the rear end?? my brother said his does it sometimes too.

the stock jets are 137.5 from memory,
if ur running a stock air filter maybe it wouldnt
hurt to drop the mains back down.

thanks for the info on tkat Errol, i'll check it out, price sounds ok, and Geoff, i tidied up the wires, cleaned and oiled the advance unit, it was a bit dry and sticky, but the problem is still there, big flat spot !motor runs a bit sweeter tho, might have to look at carbies, seems as tho it fuels up, i have 147 mains, can't remember what the pilots are but they shouldn't be a prob at those revs, vibration has all but gone, i'll sort out a different mount when i get time, i've also noticed a big thump or thud that seems to be coming from the rear end when i'm in first gear when  i push it thru the flat spot and she takes off, feels like something lets go then grabs again, THUD!! maby cush drive???
