Ah yeah,   if the brake-lever sits any more than about 20 mm's higher than normal,  the kick- lever is gonna jam at it's lowest point,  but possibly you could skim down the thickness of your brake-lever where it slides on it's spline so the brake-lever sits inward a few mm's and maybe knock a shallow groove in the brake levers' shank, 1mm of clearance is all it takes,  all depends on how high your brake-lever sits above normal

Mate, the peg position is not the problem for me, for as I said I'm running floor boards on mine.

I've compared the photos with the bike over a few cold ones yesterday and I know now that I will clear the boards. However........ ???
Because of the boards I have had to raise the angle of the rear brake pedal and I don't think the kicker will clear it on full depression when you sink the boot in.

I'm going to ring a couple of wreckers to find an 850 kicker and go down and try it out before I buy.

Watch this space ::)

Hi Fred, on the XS11's with the more-forward mounted footpeg mounts,  the hinged 750 and 850 levers DO bolt straight on with no files or hacksaws needed.   Only on the more-rearset 78's do you need to piss around a bit to get the good fit.   And  the different footpeg mounts are interchangeable between both types anyway

Thanks guys,

a bit pricey you reckon Jeff? I've been looking at that one for about a year now but still can't justify the cost.

Well thought through pgnz.
I'm running foot boards with a heel - toe shifter. I'll print the photos and check it out for clearing the board. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Like I said though, here we are again: out with the files and hacksaws. Somewhere out there is the one that will just bolt on. Somewhere..............

Here's an XS850 folding lever,  10 bucks from ebay, won't clear the 78E footpegs coz the 78E footpegs sit further back than the later models, but does clear the later model pegs.  Mines a 78E so worked round that problem easily enough, used a later model peg bracket,  hacksawed it and heated it's U- bracket on a gas stove,  then hammered the U into an L shape,  then bolted it on with a bit of filing here and there, and bolted on a pillion peg.  Being a pillion peg it also folds up and stays locked in position while you kick.  Also got to skim a new clamping bolt groove onto the spline with a chainsaw file or suchlike  to sit your lever in the desired position.  All sweet.

If anyone is after one of these, I've got an extra spare lever plus the little wingnut / bolt and cover to mount it under the airbox

Slight issue Errol?

I've just bought a new chrome panel for the left side of the airbox after searching for 3 years.

I still want the upper right panel and I'm not prepared to start a search for the lower one as well.

Scrub the xs750 idea, restart the search.

Fred,
I fitted my first E model with a kicker off an XS750. Fitted straight on and cleared everything important. Only slight issue was that it rested against the airbox when folded away.

Hi Fred,

You may have already thought of this, but my guess is that if anything will simply fit straight on, it will come from an early to mid 80s Yamaha trailbike. I had an '86 TT250 a few years ago and wouldn't be surprised if the folding kickstart of one of these would fit. It never occurred to me to check this during the year or so that I owned both the TT and my XS.

I like the idea of a permanently fitted folding kickstart too, so you just added a job to the bottom of my rainy day list - thanks! (No, really! With this La Nina weather pattern expected to continue until around April, there is very real danger I might run out of tinkering to do and have to resort to polishing....)

They come up quite often actually (unless you're looking for one), and usually a fair bit cheaper than that.
I bought mine on ebay after I lost mine on a run when I had a bad battery.

It took a couple of weeks to find one but I ended up paying $19 to the door, and then like magic they were for sale all over the place.

I actually would like to put a folding kicker on, like my old K2 750 four.
Every time I ask this question about what will fit I get "If you cut this or weld this or drill this out you can make it fit".
Somewhere out there there is a folding kicker that will just bolt on. I know there must be!

Really? There's one just like it in my garage cupboard.

Unfortunately, some clever-clogs has welded my right peg, so it is impossible to get enough travel to use the kickstarter in anger. Hence, it lives in the cupboard instead of the sidecar boot. Taking the peg off and 'unwelding it' is still a long way down my rainy day jobs list, but if this rain keeps up, who knows? In the last few days I've all but finished a bike that has been waiting 13 years for my attention...
