This is the internals as they come out of the shock body.

A one-way valve on the end of the tube - it looks nearly identical to the valve emulators that they put in forks.

Not much wear and even the rubber seals look pretty good.

I'll see what new seals cost before I decide whether or not to renew them.

The foam rubber stops are goosed, hopefully I can get them from IKON.

I also decided that it would be lazy of me to get the springs powder-coated, so I stripped the old paint off the springs and started the painting process, using an etch primer and I'll paint them up with black gloss enamel.

If I stuff it up then I'll get them powdercoated.

So these shocks are a pair of the old Double D's from the mid 70's - early 80's.

They don't have the dial on the top, but otherwise they are very similar.

This is how they looked when I got them.

I got the springs off by using a clamp on each side to pull the spring down far enough to remove the retainer cap.

The caps were seriously tarnished, but are made of a nice alloy and polished up a treat.

Tomorrow I'll see what it'll cost to get the springs powdercoated. If it's too pricey I'll paint them myself.

Well I got them apart tonight.

These are the old 76 model shocks.

Compressed the springs using a couple of clamps.Pin spanner wouldn't budge the top of the oil reservoir, but a couple of blows with a punch had them open.

Oil inside was absolutely stinking.

Not much wear on the internals. I'll see what new seals will cost, but I'd probably get away with re-using the old ones.

The rubber bumpers are shot - anyone ever seen any of these in Bursons or the likes?

Internals are a bit less complex than the ones in the writeup as the older ones dont have the dampening dial adjuster.

Quite confident that these will scrub up quite OK.

Here's a thread...

I'll be rebuilding an old set myself shortly.

Anyone done this before?
