When I built this engine back in 1995, I went to the 1196 (74.5mm) Wiseco kit. I had the head rebuilt professionally, which included porting and flowing and had the cams ground by a bloke in QLD who does race cars. I used the original Carbs with a K&N stage 2 kit, which loosely means bigger jets. Exhaust is standard and original and the air box is retained using a K&N filter. Overall I was happy with the build. High compression made starting harder and had to use a battery with more cranking power. I don't know if other folk have had this problem. I have since rebuilt engines on some of my other XS11s and used the standard pistons (71.5mm) not near as much oomph but I don't need speed anymore. These engines cruise easily above the speed limit without ripping your arms off (1196 kit). Some folk replace the carbs with the Mikuni BS36 from an FJ1200, with a couple using Flat Slides, (see basket case on YouTube).but again the Stock BS34 are more than enough (for me).

Hey John,
All interchangeable. If you're going the 1196 way, make sure the head you use is perfect.
I have the 1196 with a stage 2 kit in the carbs. Goes like a cut snake.
Where are you located?

Eddy

Hi. I recently joined the forum after purchasing a 79 E model. But after checking off frame and engine numbers I find the engine is 3X1 prefix and a 1980 model. Not a biggie for me but I sm curious will earlier model heads and barrels interchange between the 78 to 80 model engines?
I read on the forum the engines or bike group into 78 to 79, 80 to 81 and 82 on.
I have brought the 1196cc kit and considering buying another barrel so I can just swap the complete assembly snd keep the original units as a separate module. But if the exchange barrel isn't compatible to my head etc then I will have to make sure I purchase the same year unit.
Regards John
