Ok, it’s not an XS but still relevant.
Some of you may know that I recently acquired a nice original low mileage CB 750 F1, when it arrived it ran and rode pretty good but ran rough at idle so a carb strip was on the cards, didn’t find much wrong with them so a quick clean and reassemble later and it was shit! 2 carbs flooded and wouldn’t hardly run.
So new needless and seats were ordered and carbs stripped and put in a vinegar bath for 12 hrs, then placed in a bi-carb solution for about 4 hrs to neutralise the vinegar, cleaned again with carb cleaner and compressed air, (26 cfm) reassembled, floats bent, tweeked, straightened, played with till all were spot on 26 mm and in line, tested, no leaks, back on the donck with airbox and all, ( ps, set the slides with a number drill an average of the 4), fired up straight away but ran a bit rough so a fiddle with idle adjustment and mixture screws an eighth of a turn at a time and it’s running really sweet, when my new vacuum gauges and colour tune kit turned up I’ll do a final tune.
So feeling pleased as a pig in shit thought I’d go for a ride, no reg yet but I’m in the Bush so who cares, picked up the tank and gave it a shake to see how much fuel it had, not much so thought better drain it and fill with fresh stuff. ( probably still had old yankie juice in it.) but nothing came out the tap, Mmmm, I thought! Remove tap, nothing! Mmmm I thought again, so a few furious shakes later and out came brown fuel and fine particles! Not a good sight so a plan was devised to clean said tank with kerosene, 2 stroke oil, stones and a concrete mixer, I’ll try and put some pics up of the contraption, will let yous know how it goes.
