Battery off, switch on, check ohms between battery + lead and earth for starters, should not be 0 ohms
If ok .....
Leave the TCI box disconnected and connect battery and watch for smoke but put smaller rated fuses to start with see if all the basic electrics (blinkers etc) work.
Then replace correct fuses and try the starter motor if that spins ok switch off reconnect TCI and regulator.
Fuel up
Press starter.

All I was concerned about was hanging the battery on the bike to check out the connections - but was concerned about frying the TCI or damaging the Reg/Rect units by having the thing live for the duration as I have heard that some things are best not left powered up if you're not running the vehicle (don't think that was an XS though) - cheers Kev

what do you mean? like just putting a battery in and turning the key on?
double check your wiring is as per drawing, fuses in place and earths connected. That all my mechanical training applied to electrics in a nutshell ;D

Hi - I posted this query on UK site too - is there anything to powering up the electrics and testing  that I should avoid or absolutely not do because I don't want to fry any components - cheers kev
