Hey Geoff,

I would say not bad luck but a momentary lapse of concentration on my part.  I can't remember greasing the new needle bearing......so I more than likely missed that step.......
The new one that has just been inserted definitely IS greased.

On a good note.....I am fortunate that it happened when and where it did. Had I not gone on the ride, the very next time I would have ridden the RH would be tomorrow morning at 0600 along a fast, busy and twisty road.  if the lock up had occurred then, the outcome could've, would've been a bit worse.

bit of bad luck there Eddie,
does your right hand bearing to torque arm spacer not have a shroud over the spacer?? would be the only way water would get passed beside the axle,,
did you remember to grease the needle roller before assembly per chance?, 1000klm dry will do that or terribly horrible crappy grease,
rust particles must have been in the cavity all along and not picked up with a quick clean,

not doubting your thoroughness for a split of a split second, would be about the only cause to the problem,

like you say all fixed now, so alls well that ends well as they say

I HAVE used a pressure cleaner recently

With all the rain I have crossed many a flooded (not too much) road

But I HAVE ridden every day, rain, hail or sun... We have had very wet weather here followed by hot and humid conditions,so 

Who knows.

it's all fixed now.  I'm glad these high tech racing machines of ours are so complicated to work on,  otherwise it would have only taken me an hour to fix and not 3.

I feel your pain Eddy.
I m SOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo Peed off...............friggin bike..........I went out to start the bike as I have nt rode it for 6 months or more .........and there were no back brakes working.
Had to Bleed the brakes cos air has got in.
 Now they are working fine.
Second time I ve has to do this in 38 yrs.......last time was after being left standing for a 10 yr spell.
I f this high maintainence keeps up I don t know what I ll do

There's a story in this one.

Just to set the scene

We had just set off from McGraths Hill Ronnie Macs on the way to the Putty Rd.

Just negotiated the sweeping right hander across the bridge over the Hawkesbury River at Windsor and had just opened the RH up to 100 Kph to catch up with the front riders.  There was a bang and then rear wheel lockup. the cars behind me backed off. All luck and no skill kept the bike upright. the end result was 2 skids, one maybe, 50m long gradually meandering into the hard stand where we final came to a grinding unceremonious stop and the other......

My rear wheel remained well and truly locked.

Side of the road diagnostics eliminated the engine as a problem.  Still ran in neutral and went through the gears with the clutch in.

  final drive, or
  wheel bearings ceased. Most obvious due to the glow of the axle and the smoke coming off it.

  The missus picked me up about an hour later with the trusty trailer in tow.
  
  At home diagnostics:
  
  • undid the four bolts connecting the Universal to the drive shaft, middle gear drive spun freely.
    Tried to get the rear wheel off, the axle was stuck fast, started small and soft, finished off with a 14lb sledgy, still no budge.
    removed the swing arm and rear wheel complete, had to cut the axle at the calliper bracket, 9" grinder came in very handy,
    Final drive now moving freely, sill could not get the remainder of the axle out however could now remove the diff which was moving freely.
    Culprit was a ceased rear wheel bearing.  After a bit of cajoling I finally liberated the axle and offending bearing from the wheel.
    
  The needle bearing had fully high ordered resulting in a thermo nuclear meltdown of the axle. the inner race was welded to the axle and the brake side of the axle had fused with the swing arm.
  
  Replaced the broken bits with spares I had and the RH lives to ride another day.
  
  Funnily enough we have had just had a shitload of rain in Sydney.  The cavity in the rear wheel was full of rust and water.  Strange since 1000k ago I had replaced all the bearings and seals.
  
  This time I packed the bearings with ultra high heat grease and filled up the cavity with the same stuff.
