I feel like a highjacker, sorry if ive butted in
All good advice, ive got both those kits in my watch list but ive got an old set of carbs for a late model.  It seems there are many differences, si many questions now at the end of this adventure. Ive licated a set for an 81 model but v expensive after exchange & freight & theyre incomplete. First q is will a pre 79 set work on a 81 model ? Its a street bike not for the track.
Does anyone have a set for sale ? I want to keepw the set i have for the next bike thats a 79 & came without carbs.

mate a kit like this to ensure you have equal float heights
http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l2632.R3.TR5.TRC2.A0.H1.Xxs1100.TRS0&_nkw=xs1100&_sacat=14780

or one like this if your local doesn,t have jets
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4X-Carburetor-Carb-Repair-Rebuild-Kit-79-YAMAHA-XS1100-AU-/281752910452?hash=item4199c83a74:g:UroAAOSwPcVVqsN8

you,ve obviously got/had it apart, on the brass spike into the bowl there is a muchly tiny hole where the spike goes into the carb body, sometimes you can get at it from the front or side sometimes it,s at the back, {the size of the end of a pin}
clean that 1 and the hole that it feeds into in the bowl

well now......
Carb set up can be tricky for sure...... I'm not sure that 147's are waaaaaay too big at all - my experience........
I ran BS34's (stock XS11 G carbs) until a couple of years ago, changed up to BS36's,
swapped my jets according to the advice at the time - the big girl just didn't run right.
I took her down to Springwood and had Freddy apply his expertise and dyno -
the result is below - I routinely get 300km out of my 24litre tank on a run before hitting reserve -
having said that, I used prob 10 litres doing 4 sessions at a Lakeside track day, always more when I'm on the throttle.
this is my set up -
Carbs
Mikuni BS36
Main Jet    160
Pilot  Air 135
Pilot 40
this is the dyno readout -

Since then, I have swapped out the Ivan Tighe cams for dialled '78 stock cams and fitted a Jardine 4-1 system to the machine - I'm giving her a birthday over the next few months including freshening up the engine (rings etc) after 100k km of trouble free motorcycling. I plan on giving Freddy another crack to see if I pick up any power.

again, "re-furbishing" with "new kits" will do jack shlt if the original stuff is still perfectly fine, if leaking gas then bung-in 4 new float valves, don't fekk with chinese stuff, go genuine mikuni only, if the local motorbike shop can't trace part

numbers and "can't" get mikuni jets etc.. then they're just a crowd of incompetent turkeys..

so assuming they're 78' type carbs with stock 137.5 main jets

go 4 x 137.5 main jets & 4 x 42.5/45 pilot jets, make needles and emulsion tubes all the same size ..

to jazz, nah, 147.5 main jets are big fail, 147 is waaaaaay too big, the biggest efficient jet for xs11 carbs is just up 1 or 2 sizes 140 or 142.5 max, any bigger is just black carbon and about 18 mpg no matter how you ride it..

137.5 are right,
180 are main air jets in the back
42.5 are right for idles
To cover yourself get a basic kit  that includes idle jets, needle  ( you don't need different lengths in your life) and seats, (with gauze) and gaskets, they may come with new air fuel screws and slide needles, to suit differing budgets
Thanks, that clears it all up. Keyster make pretty good kits, just got to find the one with all the right size jets & mixture screws although what I have are probably ok anyway. We are doing a complete ground up rebuild & it wouldn't be quite right not putting a new kit through it now.
Regards

I'm in the same boat, I have an '81' bike that was in bits & the carbies have been cannibalized, there seems to be a mix of jet sizes & wondering if they are for an earlier model. The parts lists don't have the second main jet listed ?? is that an Aus or special just for here, the parts diagrams have it blocked off with a screw.
I have the mix screw on the outside, mains are all 137.5, second mains are all 180, pilots are 2 / 42.5. 1 / 40 & 1/45
I was going to put full kits through all 4 but can't determine which to buy or if they are even for this bike.
Can anyone help ?

i would be happy with gasket, needle and seat i would like to change the main jet to a 147 just because i plan to use pod filters. but it can be done later. also i would like to change the O'rings if i can. any ides or thoughts?
i know the Ebay kit i was looking at dose not have the o'rings so i will have to get them from some where different.

there are but more on the technical side now, if you just want gaskets, a basic set with your air fuel will get you out of trouble, if you want to go deeper and start replacing slide needles and emulsion tubes there are numbers to match up

oh i see, i will try to have a better look at the carbs tonight. I'm putting a kit through because 1 the gasket is broken  2 the needles were all stuck in the seats (i had to remove them with a pin punch) so you can see what the rest is going to be like  :-[  .i should probably do all the orings as well .

yo,  there's no reason for rip-off "carb kits" unless the previous
"parts" have been lost or gorillas have already been in there previous mangling stuff..
