Dont know if you are heading down there??
As for a bike Paul, will be looking for a reasonable but cost effective bike whilst up there. So be interested to see whats on the market up that way?
Im here now, so the journey begins!

Exactly the spot Paul, but coming back up the hill toward Black Springs.
Agree, its so damn easy to creep speed , and in truth I agree it happens every time I get on a bike really in some way. But yep, my number was up!
The HD is Russells, other bro rob sold his Kawasaki Harley looking thing (Vulcan 1500?) a short time ago, hes now thinking about something to replace it, but hes bought a new property at Yetholme so is going to be "farmer joe" for a while and bikes off the agenda.

I landed a new job, am off to Gympie in QLD to manage a Timber plant for Carter Holt Harvey for 12 months or so. ....Change management they call it.  Well thats my brief anyway.
start next week.

good news with the bike
bad luck with the ticket
I break the law every time I ride and I bet many others do too, its just a numbers game and yours was up.
I'm pretty sure I know the spot that you got done and if its the one I'm thinking it really is a big temptation to open her up with that big long down hill straight.
which one of your brothers has the HD?

I must add this- in no way do I condone speeding on the roads. We broke the law, we pay the penalty.

Well,
Just thought Id close this conversation, and offer thanks to all who provided info /insight and parts.
so, Ive replaced:
plugs /caps /2-3 coil /wiring to pickups /fuse connections /TCI unit  and whilst at it all exhaust flange gaskets.

Result- bike running beautifully, starting, idling as it did, and working well enough to recieve a special award from a HWP officer on a road in the middle of nowhere yesterday whislt running along with my brother (out on his Harley XYG thingamy 105 cube etc etc).
On a 3 klm straight stretch on the oberon taralga-goulburn road, no traffic, only us and it turns out a very well hidden HWP car.

Officer to me: "you know that at speeds over 140klm you should be walking home , and your mate riding behind you is no different"
Me: "I have no excuse officer", just taking the bike out for a decent run after repairs"
Officer: "Licenses- and whats the plate on your bike?"
Me: "its a club plate" (now thinking -f@#k! here we go...)
"Im out on a gazzetted ride day in my club" (lucky I called the pres in the morning eh....)
Officer: What are your conditions?
Me: Test and tune 50klm radius and gazzetted ride days.
My Brother chips in: " Yeah we are out on a ride for my birthday- we are brothers"
Officer: "Im just going to the car and writing this up"

Now we are thinking shit, how do we get home from here on foot... and what the hell do we do now... idiots!

Officer comes back: to my brother (Harley rider)-"I dont know how you ride that thing that fast" (I giggle to myself...)
then to us both " you know the speed limit is 100klm /hr"
Us: (like school boys) Yes officer....
Officer: Ive written you both up at 10klm over, now ride as you are supposed to.
Us: Thank you officer (we take tickets, watch him get back in car and head off to get someone else on this open road...).
We look at each other and just laugh, we high 5 and just stand there looking like idiots that have just won the lottery, but have a $253 prize ticket.
we head on to Oberon, back to tarana pub and have a relieving beer.
What the hell just happened????

So, in closing- the XS is running very well, the issues I had have gone and the bike is performing very well. Now I just need to place my need for speed back into my race bike and the track, we were lucky in the end that we still have a  license, we broke the law, we got done.
Im still not happy that cops have hide tactics on an open road in the middle of nowhere where we can make a pretty fair decision about risk to ourselves, we werent on a winding well used road, but, we did do the "wrong thing".

would you ????

Great news Grant.............woo hoo ........."she lives to ride another day"...or 36 years  :-\
Sooooooooo...........I suspect the issue was a cold solder joint or failing components in the TCI unit.
A simple way to possibly restore your original TCI unit for another 36 years and something which costs nothing other than a little of your precious time..(after you ve finished working on the house that is,... :-X.....cough cough ) would be to simply wet all solder connections on the circuit board.
Use a suitable size iron and tip with a little solder each time and remelt the solder points.
The large power transistors are a good place to start given the type of fault you have been experiencing....( I suspect a cold solder joint).....but for what s it s worth I d go over all of them jic.
If your not experienced at doing this give it to someone who is........as you can cause damage or problems with too hot an iron or not the right size tip/heat holding it on a component and create a bad joint ....or overheat components and damage them.

Well a test ride today with just new caps and TCI /and pickup wires (and fuel cap vent clear) all fixed and the bike seemed to run well.
I dont think the ride long enough though (70klm) and it was very cold up here in mountains.
I did work it pretty hard at times, and engine obvioulsy quite warm, but we shall see, I hope to fit coils by weekend and ttake it on a run then to really see whats what.

Its a weird experience riding a bike just waiting for it to "break down"........ bit surreal on the old pig.

Replacement coils and caps to come. Then lets see if the old pig still plays up....
checked out regulator / current /voltage delivery- all good.
Just need weather not raining and above zero to test! damn cold and miserable up here at present.  And Im supposed to be making the most of my time between jobs! Ha!

Be starting on repairs to my race ducati next, brackets to fab and weld and look at exhaust repairs / refabrication of pipes, that could be fun.....
Think the partner thinks I will be working on the house. mmmmm

Teetering Paul,  but still balanced.

Im so close to getting these issues out of the way now.

I fitted the replacement TCI unit I had, now I dont know if it was my eyes or the late afternoon in the shed, but the ignition indicator lights (oil and neutral) seemed immediately brighter??
Bike started without issue.

Need to ride to test.

I did a few measurements on coils too, and approx 1.5 ohm on coil for 1 and 4, but down and couldnt really get a solid reading on coil for 2 and 3, seemed close to 1 or even below, so this may be the issue I have suspected. Cleaned all connections once more, another check over with screwdriver and socket where possible.
Tomorrow its road test again.

Im thinking replacing coils a good idea.

Will update. (and keep myself balanced.........) for now.

Yes, like that , or very similar.
They are a really reasonable price, and reliable.
You can do the klms in comfort with the "modern touch". A good mate runs a euro bike workshop and is a specialist in them too, so that always helps.
Will  mean I part with the good old XS though, as I really just dont see it as the constant commuter anymore, its had a great life, is in great condition, but should have a more "peaceful retirement" me thinks.

we shall see what happens.
If I decide to sell the old girl, I will place it here first in case anyone is interested.
Will put my spares etc in with it too.
