Here s a link to the UK site relating to Model numbers............

http://www.xs1100.co.uk/history.htm
Jonesy........It would be great to have a definitive topic set up just to answer that question across all the models for future reference .
Looking though the couple of different workshop manuals I have.....they don t .......as far as I can see.........really address that in relation to the timing set ups with different models.
I m guessing the minor changes/differences were dealt with via additional appendices being sent out to the dealerships .

Is a 1980 G model a 3X1?
If so it is adjustable at the timing plate. ie big slots that hold the whole assembly on.......or.........did the H have a 3X1 motor but modified/non adjustable timing plate.
my drug and alcohol effected memory (from my youth ) recalls that my G model was a 3X1 with adjustable timing and with weights.
Eddy your problem from earlier discussions sounds to be carby related.........just a thought are there any springs between the carby lid and the diaphragm/slide without the spring (s) your slides would lift and make it rev......or I could be totally wrong  :-\

Hi Jeff
The marker is in position and has, I think red paint on the screw, so I would say its good.
That being the case I just need to align with the F mark and Im good to go?
There is a a couple of degrees movement in the end plate on the shaft.
Correction, it seems smoothest when the pick up coil is set all the way anti clockwise.

The stationary pointer should align with the
"F" mark on the timing plate
Has the stationary pointer been removed or shifted that you know of ?
I f it has.......... you will have to go through a series of steps to reposition it where it should be .

Hi Ed
Can I use your thread for another timing question?
I have the timing light on a standard F model but not sure what revs ( no tacho) or marks I am aiming for.
Its idling on all four but seems to be smoothest when hard up clockwise against the adjustment.
New dyna coils with the resistor removed and the vac advance is working.
It idles well but missing a bit in the midrange, otherwise goes like a rocket, might even rego it!

The 2H9 I think has the weights on the back
I'll see if I can get Mal to explain the differences.

I am going to try and get conversion plates made up to fit newer more efficient ignition systems.
