Got the seat back from Jim's Trim yesterday and he did a great Job. Stuck to his $90 quote but I probably spent that in petrol so total cost for the seat was about $200
Jims knows his stuff and he convinced me (before he did the work) that the foam I used was probably not the best as the combination would compress too much and fatigue the vinyl. I had spent a considerable amount of time talking with Dunlop to work out what foam to use. Their recommendation was the yellow medium density foam but from Jim's advice I should have just used the pink foam. It was my idea after watching this
Custom Motorcycle Seat
Considering I ended up getting all the foam for free (around $200+ worth) I will just put it down as a learning experience.
Final look is very OK I didn't want to but I might have to put the grip bar back on the break it up a bit?

I see what Jim means about the compression though as when you get off the seat the vinyl is usually wrinkly for a while before going back to normal

I was going to source some race foam to start on Mrk II seat but Jim reckons that is too hard and has convinced me to try his pink foam which seems just a bit harder than the pink foam I used. It was also cheap only costing $10 for all I should need. So stay tuned for Mrk II  8)

Thanks Scarfey, I meant too late the foam is on and it is now at the upholsterers. The guy seems very good so after a bit of discussion on how I wanted it, I just said you know what you are doing better than me so you decide, LOL poor bugger. This seat has only cost me $25 for the foam glue, Jim has quoted $90 to cover the seat (but I would expect this to go up a bit)  Foam ended up being free. Biggest cost may be the petrol delivering it to Grenfell, Jim's Trim.
Will be fun to see how it turns out and it has been a great leaning experience so I reckon I will be heading out there again soon with a low cut café racer type seat.
Just need to source the harder foam. Might have to just courier the next seat back n forth n save on petrol !
I could make a whole seat out of fibreglass but that stuff is not cheap!

Ps text a little bigger just for you :)

Brett

Fibreglass is essentially plastic so if you warm it up you can bend it.

When the cook goes out pop it in the oven warm it up [or more domestically safe warm it with a heat gun] then sit it back of on the bike to get the right set on it

Great advice fellows.....
Bretto - ensure that the seat base is the correct shape (not bent/warped) prior to glassing

Errol

Great minds.

The same thought occurred to me. De-rust it first and put a layer of cloth over it will make it really strong but light.

Brett, if it's not too late already, I'd be putting a thin layer of fibreglass over the top of the base to fill those rust holes over and then a paint with resin from the underside to seal the whole deal. Wouldn't weigh more than a couple of ounces and would make the base a whole lot stronger, plus it'll never rust after that.
