Well I can report back that the superglue is good for about 5000km's Bourke and back, Phillip island n back + numerous day trips. The speedo needle was starting to go all wacko like the tacho, would that be anything in common effecting the little black box thing in the speedo?

Holding it all firmly in place for recrimping

The repair, not perfect but  it'll have to do

Someone has been in here before and the foam stuff that goes in between the clock and the outer shell was in need of replacing, 6 mm Oring cord is a reasonable substitute.

now for the long term test to see how super glue handles life on the road

Fast forward to the following day
Heres a pic with the tools used to  pull apart.
Note the 2 feathery edges from uncrimping on the top side of the upturned cover, these are the lower and inside edges that are least visible on the bike.
And the broken needle that started all this. I would've lived with the wacko tacho but the speedo was too difficult to guesstimate speed properly. Especially with all the revenue cameras these days

Next photo is the patient on the table for the repaiir operation.
A 3/16" allen key was the perfect height to hold the needle straight and level while the super glue set. The paint pen is holding the needle off the zero stop so no stress while the glue sets. Its a bit blurry but you get the idea

Now to go and put it back together.

Yep I took a similar approach, I screwdrivered/uncrimped 2 sides that arent on show on the square standard clocks.
now for the fiddly bit of repairing the broken needle in such a way that it doesnt look like crap every time you check your speed. I'll get some pics up.
As for the tacho I can get hold of a known good one to test and see if the "EH fuel guage syndrome" is in the tacho itself or what Eveready was thinking of.

Yeah I thought it'd be $$exy, thats why I was going to have a go at the speedo myself, getting the crimped/pressed cover off is pretty tedious. Probably a lot of the cost is in that part, opening it up and closing it again with out leaving any butcherous tell tale signs you've been there.

Just before you got sending it off to the shop, check the wiring connector block behind the fuse panel mounting frame. Trace the white wires from the alternator up into that area and you'll find it hidden in there. That's a known area for bad connections (my old loom had that plug melted together) and as the tacho takes its feed from those wires, that could be where it's getting the erratic behaviour from.

Can any of you blokes reccommend an instrument repairer? My tacho is that far out of control that it will swing madly from zero to off the clock until occasionally it will get stuck right around where the fuel guage is, then a bump will send it going again. Actually made me laugh in my helmet watching its crazy antics. (yeah yeah small things) Fuel guage and illumination lights works perfect.
Also last run i went on to the thunder rally the speedo needle broke....what the! so now its only about 5mm long
I'll probably have a go at bodgying the speedo needle myself....pulling that crimped metal shroud/glass holder off is a bugger w/out ruining it. But the tacho is beyond my know how

So any tips or reccommendations of a good shop to send the tach to?
