Replace all the seals, something about boring out the wossnames, to be honest I didn't catch half of what he said, but considering it's only $1500 more than a straight up gearbox rebuild, it seemed worth it. (I had planned on getting a list of him if I went ahead and posting it here. My forte is computers, not engines).

I basically asked for an engine rebuild.Whilst the engine is running OK currently (Though it does get damn warm, oh for a temperature guage), I don't see why I wouldn't pay more now to get it rebuilt, when most of that $4k is going to be the time of pulling the engine out and putting is back in in the first place.

ye gods, Surfside quoted $4k for the gearbox, or $5.5k for gearbox and general engine refresh.

That's well north of my budget, and a lot of money than I really want to spend on the bike.

Having never owned such an old bike, if I was to go this route, the full engine restore along with the gearbox restore, am I likely to get 5+ years without any other big expenses? I can't think of anything myself, but as I said, it's not something I've had to deal with.

Steptoe, I'd give it a go if I was used to riding the XS solo, having never ridden one solo, and my Ninjas being a good 100kgs lighter, I'd rather not be riding an unfamiliar bike, with an unfamiliar front end.

Surfside look a goer. No complaints about the chair, happy to do give me a price for the gearbox. And the head mechanic has 30+ years experience and actually likes working on older bikes.,

Thanks Eddy.

I can't remove the sidecar and ride the bike over to the mechanic because it has a leading link front end, which makes things a tad unstable without a sidecar.

I was going to give http://www.surfside.net.au/ a try too. They look pretty good. (Why does Brookvale have so many motorcycle mechanics, oh right, the awful traffic involved in getting anywhere would make a bike/scooter pretty appealing).

Hey TyKwy

You'll be hard pressed for a mechanic to work on your XS11.  I've asked a few around my way and they are reluctant to work on the older bikes because the bikes have a number of faults (they are old) and the shop does not want to be held liable for another unrelated problem that your bike may develop.

Having said that I have spoken with a couple of places that MAY be willing to work on XS1100s.

This bloke is old schoola nd has worked on these bikes in the early days.

Same with this mob

They got my RH a Blue slip when the bike came down from Brisbane.  I found then to be quite good.  Again happy to work on the older bikes.

Give them a call.

How hard is it to pull the chair off and take it to a mechanic? or does the no inclination extend to that as well

Can anyone recommend a good Sydney mechanic that won't freak out that I have a sidecar attached who could fix my dodgy gearbox. I have neither the time nor inclination to do it myself.

I've decided I want to keep the XS, just need to get first gear working because fully loaded she can't launch in second.
