Swapped my disc pads over last weekend and since then, have had an annoying squeak, squeak coming from the front end. The sound changes when turning which led me to assume wheel bearings were shagged. Pulled the front wheel to replace them and noted a couple of things. Firstly, that there was no noticable play in the front wheel with the front jacked up off the ground.

After removing the wheel and digging the seals out, I found


 ^ this on one side. an open bearing just waiting to pick up anything that found its way past the seal


 ^ and this one came off the speedo drive side showing evidence of where the drive tangs hadn't been located properly. I noticed a squeak coming from the wheel a couple of times after having a new front tyre fitted which was stopped after removing the wheel again myself and putting it on properly. Didn't realise the bearing seal had been deformed till I removed the seal today.

Which brings me to the reason I put this story on this thread


 ^ after removing the bearings, I had a look inside and saw quite a large cavern inside the hub. That's the end of one of the disc bolts flush with the edge of the casting.


 ^ and yes, I know it's a blurry shot, but it shows how much further the wall of the cavern goes before it comes around under the spoke base casting.
Anyone got a Standard wheel with the bearings out that can do a comparison photo?

Just went out to check the wheel on my 2H9 donor bike. Bit of a surprise here.
Here goes, spoke by spoke -

H T (Cast) M S (stamped on raised bosses)

1.85 x 19 (cast)

 *(Yamaha tuning fork logo) ENKEI 2 Japan  (all cast)

19 x 1.85 DOT (cast)

78 101 JIL (all cast)

Never realised they were made by Enkei. They were a very sought after wheel in their day.

And, here's the stuff off my Special wheel -

N 19 x MT 1.85 DOT (all cast)

JIL F94 6H (all cast)

Suitable for tubeless tires (stamped)

3 (cast) 8 (stamped) 78 (stamped) 2 (cast) 6 (cast)

Need to check frame numbers 2H9 or 3X1 also and see if there is a part number somewhere on the wheel, I don't recall.

I know mine is a bitsa Christian but mine is a 3X1 and I thought Jonesy's and Goerge's was of the same breed as well?

Seems that the 2H9's used the wheels from probably the 750 triple and the 3X1 like mine then started using the 2H9 wheels which are lighter.
Talking to Mal about this yesterday he said it would have made a difference, if he realised it back then, in the 6 hour race but the scrutineers would have picked up the difference from stock anyway as the bikes were not fitted with the lighter wheels then.

Yeah I put a washer between the new bracket and the fork leg

I agree jamming washers isn't kosher. I machined up a fullsize spacer to match the ones I got off Mal.  Clearance to the spokes need to have a safety margin which I achieved

That has been mentioned in conversation Bryan but now that we have found 7mm difference in the wheel I jumped to that conclusion.  :-X

Running such a small gap between caliper and spoke ain't kosher,  neither is jamming washers under discs and calipers, might work but just isn't right.   Alternative just whip out some grinding tools and bang some 2mm deep notches into the damn spokes instead   lol

I had the same concern but the raised flange simply locates the disc centrally and there was enough protruding to do that. All the forces are rotational which are take by the bolts so I was happy to space my discs.

I had the same concern and emailed Xtian and Mal about the issue also.
Might be better to play around with the bracket instead more packing behind the disc

Yes it is, but i did notice that the 80 model junker i have in the shed doesn,t have rim locks but i can;t get to it to measure the wheel, buried in junk!!
