That same square wire looking thing is on all of my early carb model bikes. It is nice to have when inserting the needles but not required. There is indeed a small spring in the needles them selves that does decide not to cooperate every once in a while. A little carb clean sprayed on them usually fixes that but I have had to spray carb clean into a small bowl and soak them for an hour or two before they let go.
Easiest way to tell if they are suspect is to flip the float up and let it bounce down. If there is no bouncing action the spring in the needle is stuck. I try this when taking them apart so I know ahead of time if they are acting up.
You can also simply push in the small tit on the top of the needle with your fingernail (if you have it out). It should immediately pop back up. Do this several times to be sure. If there is any hesitation clean them again.
As the pin is at the leverage point, if it is stuck it will multiply the amount and affect the floats in a huge way and the floats will overfill the carb.

1 more in the wings patiently waiting with a big bore kit already installed.

having worked in Ev,s import carbs, which are the same basically as mine,

no spring, but a very fine wire square  on the end of the needle that slips over the tang on the float

the small point on the needle has,,{should have} a small internal spring or is this the spring your talking about?

Hey runner
There is no spring connection between float and needle. I could be wrong but I think the float jet does have an internal spring loaded tip that contacts the float tang though, but definitely no connection of any kind between float and jet

CARBY CLEAN NEEDLE AND SEAT QUESTION????
« Reply #1 on: November 21, 2013, 06:51:36 PM »
Hello Good Peoples ;D

pulled the carbies off to clean them ( fuel ran into airbox :'( ) when i pulled the bowls off i noticed that the needles (needle and seat) on the carbs do not have a spring them to connect to the float is it normal for the early carbs, the ones in the new K & L carby kits do'nt have them also.?? my bike is also a import don't know if that makes a difference .. waiting on new carb boots to arrive them will put back on the bike .bike has run good for the last 4yrs..
