Went for another Ride with Jonesy yesterday. We went out to Wattle Flat to visit a guy called Carl that has a motorbike workshop with Dyno.
http://www.caferacer.com.au/content/index.htm
He seems to live upto what he claims and seems also to be good value for your money. Only there on the weekends at the moment.
This is Jonesy territory and he sure has himself nestled in amoungst some great riding country. He blasted away from me once we got into the tight corners and that was great to watch.
I wanted Jonesy to have a ride of my bike to access, ended up he gave me a ride of his as well. First thing I noticed was how smoooooth it was. Everything was smooth the suspension the seat the gear change the brakes everything worked just as it was meant to.
Jonesy said in the quick ride he found the motor was going well with no flat spots. Once back on my bike the ride home was very uncomfortable LOL. I felt every bump and vibration thinking it should be better.
I have checked the engine mounts but unsure if they are causing a vibration at around over the 100km Gota go

I do need a bracket for the new speedo even if I can't afford to get it fitted yet.  :-X

When I went to Canowindra the other day I cable tied a NavMan to the bars. I found the speed/revs was some what different to what I expected.  4000 revs was about 100, 5000 revs was about 130.

Seems I have picked up a new miss. I am guessing the carbies need another clean. When it started the other day i thought the heat might be getting to the old carbies but now I think they may have picked up some crap. I used good thick fuel line but it left no room for the filters. Looks like I might have to find some room??
Dam I was looking forward to working on the modified carbies but another little step back.  :-*

Have the bike another tune up today, think I got the carnies synced a little better, inspected the plugs which looked like they where cleaning up, I hit them with the wire brush this time for a fresh start.
I had no luck with the color tune again. Although I had a fan running I think it gets too hot while I am stuffing around like an armature. It seemed I was running a bit rich so I just set all fuel mixture screws to 1 and 1/4 turns out. This may be a bit lean.
Took the bike for a ride and it is running pretty good. I think there may still be a slight lag out of idle but it will only show up when you don't select a low enough gear coming out of a very slow corner, as in a 20kmh town corner.
Not sure if I am imagining it or not but the motor seems to be running hoter with the leaner mixture, might have read that some where. So I might increase to one and a half turns out and see how that goes. Other than that I think it needs a better mechanic than me to get much better.
I told the misses I can by myself a speedo for Xmas to see how fast I am going or a new clutch to make me go faster. This little comment might get me the ultra dear Motogadget speedo that I really want:)

Looks like I have the brake leak fixed, took the bike upto 6 grand again today, must have been a cross wind or something that made the helmet vibrate as it was ok today.
Hopefully a fresh tune up in the morning. Trying to work out the Xmas wish list. New clutch handlebars, speedo, headlight or rear shocks ?

Hi Jeff
Sorry again for the slow reply, Internet should be back online soon.
I haven't done a fresh tune up. It usually starts easy and soon idles well. Aceleration is good, I have recently found a slight lag from the lowest revs. It will be interesting to see if I can tune this out. At the moment the biggest power loss is from the clutch slip. It goes great as long as I don't try and ride like Wayne Gardner lol.
The roads out here get a hammering from the trucks but I didn't stay at the vibrating helmet speed for too long so not sure if I can blame the bike or the road. I would think the back shocks are not as new as they could be and any number of other reasons as you suggest for a bike this old. Think the exhaust mount bolts are ok but I will check the engine mounts.
I am starting to think I was going faster than I thought. The tachometer was over 5000 revs when my vision started to vibrate. Not sure how close to 6000 revs I got as I was too busy watching the road but I think I was almost there.
Think Santa needs to bring me a speedo.
Thanks Errol that's great illustration

Vision blurring from vibration...?
Does nt sound right.......Brett what are your thoughts on why ,where , and how come you seem to have excessive vibration ?.
Is it from the bike or the road you were travelling on?

My first thoughts are.........start with the simple things first........
After having corrected valve clearances and attending to the timing issues etc.................it s "Now" time to revisit a carb synch and colortune session.....if that has nt already been done.
Are you entirely happy you have solved the timing issues?
No exhaust popping on de acceleration ? A smooth power band ...or....lag and then power coming on ?
Do you have a regular or intermittent idle?

Check the exhaust mounts at the rear are somehow insulated from the frame......and the same with the  exhaust in other areas.

Don t worry about the worms.....if they are not getting put back in their tin every now and then on here......we would nt be doing our job on the forum.............not to mention......."Pandoras Box" syndrome. ;D

Didn't mean to stir the worms :/ not sure how reliable my speedo was before it crapped out, although I did check with the misses driving in the car and I found 4000 revs around the 100km mark so I was guessing 5000 revs was something like the 140.
Much over 5000 revs and my vision starts to blur from the vibration so I was getting curious.
Errol when I first went to 100 it was with a chin less "scooter" helmet since having the full face 100 does not seem so freaky :/

Hmmmmmm.......... Pass me that opener, please.
Jeff, those numbers equate very closely to my figures for 4th gear, and don't forget, I'm running a smaller rear wheel too.
Are you sure your friend of a friend of a friend had it in top gear???

Fred's figures look about right.

A friend of a friend went for a ride today on his XS1100 E to check rpm/speed in 5th.........using a GPS.
3000 RPM.....73KPH
4000 RPM.....97KPH
5000 RPM ....118 KPH

The lid is tight....... on the "Can o Worms ".

I believe Fred has " BIG BORE KIT ".

guys,

I've got a true 110kph at 4,100rpm so yes, 5,000rpm is much more like 140kph.

You could also just go past a known radar site and wait for the readout in the mail ???

Brett, when you ordered the new plates did you also go for the new springs? and when you put them in (just tell me if I'm telling you how to suck eggs ::)) make sure you give the motor a good flush out of the old oil and replace it with a good old fashioned NON friction modified mineral oil.

Personal choice of oils is just that, Personal Choice.

I've always run with Valvolene Motor Oil 20w/50 with a rating of SE or better and my old girl clicked over 367,880klm yesterday.
