Chrisso,

The brackets are made from 10mm aluminium
Check out the UK forum threads.

The folk in Adelaide use this mod with 1 - 2mm spacers behind the rotor. You may be able to fabricate these using SS. This enables clearance between the spokes and the caliper.  I can see a plan hatching.

What exactly are the headers? 4-2 aftermarket something? Im guessing the Caliper torque arm bracket and muffler brackets were laser cut?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey chrisso
the headers used to be a staintune 4 into 1 that I cut up into 4 individual pipes then welded  onto the 2 -1 Y pieces that I made from scratch
Front caliper brackets were laser cut and milled from 12mm?(its been a while) thick aluminium. rear torque arm and muffler brackets I hand made

Hey Chrisso,

A couple ogf months back Snake in Adelaide gave me a set of brackets to mount the Yamaha Blue Spot calipers onto the front end of a standard xs1100.  The calipers are common at any wreckers and sell for around $150/pair.  If you laser cut at work I can send you a bracket to copy and perhaps you could run up a couple of sets for fellas on the list who are considering the mod.

Cheers

Eddy

I can do them in Stainless but we only do that in 1.2mm---or possibly 2mm . That wouldnt make much of a caliper bracket. Can do in Mild steel up to 6mm. I dont have my bike handy but im sure they are thicker than that? If you want you could send me a diagram with all relevant hole sizes dimensions etc . Im happy to help. I'd like a set of those Yam calipers but im sure I'd have clearance issues with the spokes.

Hi Guys
if your suggestion comes to fruition I'd certainly be interested in upgrading my front brakes this way.

''Does it still break header studs? that used to annoy the shit out of me''

It used to before I had the headers welded and I think studs . Looking back at the records from 2002 I've written ''Headers sorted properly, HRC coated, MIG weld , sleeves on head end cyl 1 and 2 ''.  I think header studs was a weak point on XS's.
Also Kreened the tank about 5 yrs back---that shit is good- and put overhaul kits in the fuel taps.
Actually that reminds me, I must tighten the header studs---tthey do come lose. Probably not sealing too good around the flanges too as theres a mad backfire and cackle on throttling off.
Im also going to fit a tacho---will make a stainless bracket at work and mount it above the speedo.

I got the XS in 2000 off a mate from the central Coast. I had a 1977 XC ute with a warm 351 but a rusty body----so we did a swap.
Bikes still going strong but the utes ancient history. When I got it it was black with a smallish yellow bit on the tank and sidecovers.
It had been neglegted but I could see the potential. What exactly are the headers? 4-2 aftermarket something? Im guessing the Caliper torque arm bracket and muffler brackets were laser cut? I do CNC Plasma laser cutting at work along with MIG welding
Id like to clean up the Engine but I guess would have to remove it for sucessfull beadblasting? Nothing else seems to clean it too good.
Tell ya what mate, reversing the rear caliper was a stroke of genius. Every bit helps---top  heavy bloody bikes eh.
Would like to improve the front brakes --problem is caliper clearance with the spoked rim. Maybe a visit to the Wreckers to check out things. Wavy front rotors too. Only problem is $.

Does it still break header studs? that used to annoy the shit out of me

Yeah Mate I've still got the records and keep them updated.
They start at 6/10/84.  59,000 km--- Someone went to Cairns --------great place, lived there 1986-7.
blah blah etc 8/11/84 Owner went to Darwin.
ditto 27/4/85  Perth  80,000km
Looking back the old girl went to the ''Oz GP'' 16/9/90.
Im guessing you got this bike around 7/1991?  I see an entry at 15/9/97 for a TRX 850...( another damn fine Yamaha )
Lets see;  I got bike Dec 2000, @ about 184,000 kms.  I rewired the headlights, Put new ( 2nd hand carbs on )
New starter motor, major welding on headers + ceramic HRC coating. New cam chain,
Since then , All new clutch--- 2nd hand Clutch basket, all new plates....15 of em, HD springs.
New fork springs, seals, Rear shocks still ok. Had seat re-shaped and re- covered,
And the obvious re-paint.   Try sanding back a 30+ yo bike, Its like Archoledgy...Scuse the spelling ..
There was black      then silver     then Tuttenkamhen  stuck his his head up , then more silver,.. I think.
Plan now is a 'Busa front end.   Not a problem with the original rims but hard to get clearance with the spoked rims. ..Also Id like to keep the original forks.  -.. FECK ive spent many many hours polishing them.

BTW  Im not selling.

G,day Fellas I'm an old/ previous XS owner who has strayed away and played about with Guzzis and presently an 850 TRX, And now I got a hankering to get back on an 11. My old one I had for 14 years toured Oz and modified with a home engineered spoked rear wheel RGV 205 twin spot fron brakes under slung rear caliper and the list goes on. parted with that in the late 90,s to an irish backhoe driver in Sydney. Would really love to here if anyone has spotted it.......meanwhile if anyones got any leads on a nicely restored XS let me know.

Thanks
Jonesy.

Wow Mate......lots to digest here.
Tell ya what, those front brakes are still shithouse..
Im off walking to the Bottlo,  Shall investiagate further.

Hey Jonesey, I know you've got your new toy to play with, and congrats on picking up a beauty.
You mentioned playing around with Guzzi's etc. back in the day, so I was wondering if you happened to find some time so post up some pics of the "other" bikes you've had in the past in this thread here, Past Rides, I'd really like to see them.

Thanks steptoe dunno about the guru bit, but yeah it was my pride and joy and I'm still proud of the work I did on it.
To answer your first post I'm still down in NSW out Bathurst way.
I've seen some of your stuff on you tube since I started trolling around this site. Started watching the clicky wheel one but net speed here is too slow to down load the whole 1/2 hour.
The first bit of history is those white brake discs are left over from when the bike went through a powder coated white wheel stage

Must be nice to know your old pride and joy is still alive and well, and being looked after now.

Besides Chrisso, there'd be a lot of people on here who would like to hear your story on your XS and the the mods done to it.
