Lads, thankyou for a great weekend. One would have to ride along way to find a better group of blokes. For me there were so many special times there but standing at sunset on the Darling holding hands with Brian and Jeff singing Kumbaya, was a standout.

.oil usage would most likely be evident....... more so the greater the load you towed or carried.

You saying Christian could lose a few pounds??? That's a bit rough.  :D :D :D

Hopefully, that's a good sign that it got oil pressure when you refilled the oil. Maybe the bottom end will be ok. Might have indeed cooked the rings but the pistons could be ok? Head gasket???
Lot of speculation in this post, eh? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Looking down through the filler hole......there was not a drop to be seen.

After adding approx 3 litres.....it was just beginning to show in the sight window.

yes we all need to keep watch on our oil levels and need to keep the window clean. ( Jeff, did you see the level in the window? we did look but I think the window was dirty, but my eyes aren't that good).
its not a big problem if the window is dirty I had to clean mine when I changed motors, dropped off the cover and scrubbed it up with brake clean and a cotton bud.
yes I used oil, 'bout 1.5 L both ways.

The correlation............ as observed by those that did use oil was...............
"When riding at" SUSTAINED" high speeds......

If you pottered up to the rally.......not surpassing around 130kph............ minimal oil usage ...........if any would be expected on average.

If you spent time on the trip............sustaining 140 to 200 plus kph.....oil usage would most likely be evident....... more so the greater the load you towed or carried.

Hi Folks,

I used no oil during the trip.  Or should I say that it was full when I left and full when I got home.  Used more fuel on the way up but after the carbitune and Colour tune fuel consumpion improved along with an increase in performance.  (The bike not me).. :P :P :P :P

Cheers

Bike came back fine on Friday (26th), great bunch that sent it.
Still sitting at work in the warehouse.
I've been running the spin-on since about 2005?? too long ago to remember.
The spin-on would not cause a problem, many in EU use them, a much more efficient and cleaner filter than the old paper one.
Close to 200ks (maybe 180) on the express way in Germany.
Have always used very little oil.
????????????????????????????

We shall see what happened soon I guess

3.5 litres of oil past the rings?
Must of been some smoke screen eh?
I don t think lack of oil through the filter...."caused" by the filter was the issue...........as there was no oil .
I can verify...........i put in close to 3 litres of oil.....and it still wasn t showing full on the oil level sight window.
The disection and elaboration is what we are all keen for.........non of us want this to happen to our beloved.
The more information we can glean from this .............we will be all better off.
However .....it would nt hurt to keep an eagle eye on your oil levels given the real life results of others on the Rally.
ps.........can you post the link to the "You Tube" clip you mentioned?

The cloud of smoke following christian is where all the oil went, past the rooted rings. Maybe? just guessing really till the autopsy is done.
Just on the oil use thing, riding in Christians group we all did the same speeds, (except for scotty of course....he just nailed it and disappeared into the distance.) I didnt use any oil but I cant vouch for the others(Eddy clutch scarfey)
I've got some reservations about the spin on oil filter adaptor too, saw a you tube clip where a bike blew up on the dyno from a spin on cartridge filter failure of some sort. I'm reluctant to put mine on now, unless Christian can confirm the filter wasnt part of the failure.

Not sure if it was widely known on this finding................at the Rally.
There was nt "ANY" oil in the crankcase!
NADDA!
Oil pressure light was on.
Oil pressure light went off when i refilled with oil.
Reported oil consumption figures and the need to top up with varying amounts by a variety of attendees would suggest Xtians bike was no different and was  unfortunately not topped up at any stage.
As already assessed by some......these bikes in general...don t use much....... if any oil around town and at on /off legal speeds around the burbs.
Maintain..... higher than usual speeds.... loaded up....... or pulling a trailer etc for sustained periods of time and oil "IS" used.
The Melbourne crew noticed this ..........sitting behind each other on the way up......and noticing the smell of oil from the bike in front.
We "ALL".........also regularly topped up with oil at fuel stops to and from the rally.
Had we not done this......."ALL" of our bikes would of been looking for transport............ back from varing locations as well.
My assessment would be..........lack of oil caused overheating to failure of various parts yet to be itemised.

Hey Christian I guess your in posession of your bike again by now. keep us posted with the ortopsy results.
twas a strange one the way it gradually died?
you could understand if it dropped a valve or holed one piston ? but the way it seemed to slowly kill of one pot a time was very odd.
anyone care to speculate on the cause? run a book?
Just for the sake of it I'll take a guess it was an ignition problem that allowed un burnt fuel to wash the cylinders and take out the rings ..........gotta start somewhere :-\
