It'd only take the ignition timing to be a bit more advanced and maybe the needles in the carbs up a notch, or different jetting to tip it over the edge.

Yep engine studs.
I have managed to find a few new ones still in packets from myoldyamaha.com but only 4 middle studs.
I asked him to post on the site as he has a good lot of OEM bits

I'll put my money on a higher than normal percentage of ethanol in the fuel. That'd lean it out for sure.  It's really evil stuff!

And, particularly because Christian's said that nothing's been changed on the bike for a long time. No new carbs, coils, air filter setup. It has to be the fuel.

very intersting.....so ,what sort of scenario can you blokes think of that would make an XS lean out like that?
In Christians case its gotta be common to all 4 cylinders, fair enough he only holed 3 but the 4th probly would have gone too if the motor could've kept running

This piston is not from an XS but from No2 son's 2 stroke outboard motor....
an air leak had developed at full throttle under the reed valve assembly leaning the mixture to that cylinder
and hey presto......hole in piston - simple as that

Hey Christian
If your getting any parts made from scratch like engine studs or whatever that arent readily available, maybe you could put the dimensions and/or fabricators details up here for fuure reference?

Going ok. Mal found it had a bent swing arm, triple tree and slightly bent forks.
All from the accident in 2006.
I just put up with it so I could ride.

Have to wait and see what happens after all the new bits arrive.
I have the Wiseco kit just the small one 1179, not after the big bang like Bryan's it is cheaper than the original stuff, more available and probably better and as many bearing and seal kits as I could find on the way on the way,
Mal is going to do a total rebuild and the new frame, have not had to run a bike in for a long time now  :P :P :P.
When he gets it going we may find out what the problem was.
The setup I have in the bike has been working for at least 6 years and did Europe ok so what went wrong is a mystery until then.
