Hey Bryan
Looks like the tarry residue that was on the carbs of the 581 project.
stip'm down till you cant pull any more bits off'em then drop them in a drum of diesel or petrol overnight so there fully submerged then get stuck into cleaning with a toothbrush and compressed air

Have you been pushing Lucrezia a bit to take those plug readings, Bryan?
I think I recall you saying a while back that it only showed itself "when being silly?"

they look pretty good bryan,
but  a whisker on the lean side,
if ur happy with how its running open the
mixture screws a quarter a turn or so, u still
want some colour on the earth strap, if that doesnt
help maybe running bp5es might be better.

fuel in airbox......looks like carb 2 needle and seat has an intermittent leak......
went for a ride yesterday.....
this after 120km....highway riding - as before 1 to 4 - L to R

all a bit lean with #4 too lean
I raised the fuel level in #4 a smidgeon and raised all the needles by one notch to the centre notch.
more after the weekend

it seems that the fuel in the airbox resulted from a leak in the fuel line....

Hmmm...??? How..?  It's more usual for an overflowing carb to spill back into the airbox... If you get this problem and remove the airbox base and filter element, you can sometimes see the fuel dripping out of the inlet trumpets...

The float level measurement varied wildly to achieve this 5mm...I haven't ever measured the fuel levels before

I think new carbs can be setup by float height, but older, worn, carbs really do need a fuel height check.  It's only then you can guarantee that the fuel levels are the same.  You'll find that other adjustments (synch and air-screw setup) follow suit now, 'cos the carbs have a level baseline for you to work from...

OK.....
I had a fiddle with things, made up new fuel lines, set fuel levels and went for a short squirt....goes great, I am going to Kilcoy tomorrow so more after that.
it seems that the fuel in the airbox resulted from a leak in the fuel line....
Using the XJR 1200 settings I have set the fuel level at 5mm below....
The float level measurement varied wildly to achieve this 5mm...I haven't ever measured the fuel levels before - I guess I have been lucky as the machine never had a problem before these BS36 units
Thanks Xtian for urging me to do so.... :D
I havent changed the jets or needles but I suspect I may raise the needles tomorrow after a run...
thanks for the advice fellows... :-*

to clean them up.
