I wouldn,t have thought there was much difference between an XS11 crank and say a Datsun 1200 one. .
having said that

Thanks guys I have the same opinion. However during my previous rebuild I investigated crank recon. The problem is that the distance between the big end webs is narrower than with cars and the crank grinding machines are built for wider grinding wheels.

Personally I do not have a problem hard chroming the journals back up to spec, as chroming should not flake or deteriorate under normal conditions. It is also seriously hard. I have hard chromed hydraulic cylinder shafts and ground back to spec....using standard seals etc.

All that is required is to find a workshop who would enjoy the challenge. Otherwise I'm afraid, I might just have to break the ol' girl down.... :( :( :(

Otherwise the other option is to open a bike crank recon business....waddaya reckon.

Will keep on investigating...I know some guys who would love the challenge in NZ!!!

To my knowledge there are very few reported problems with the crank shaft.
Would it be an option  to aquire a good second hand one and install new bearings ?
I personally would somehow feel a lot better knowing there are no coatings and resurfacing that in themselves could deteriorate at speed.



(I think i just poked a bear..in saying that)

Shouldnt be too difficult for a "good" reputable engineering/machine shop. Should be a few of 'em in Townsville. your local bike shop might be able to give you some leads too I''ve had head work done by repco in the past with good results,  (and some other headwork in the 70's & 80's  but wont help with your motor  ;D)

Does any know of a company that can re-con cranks. Grind....hardchrome/metal spray to oversize.....grind back to spec??? ??? ???
