Approximately 400 rpm rise at 100kph. Hardly any difference in fuel mileage but makes a huge difference in top gear acceleration and much easier to get off the mark, particularly with the trailer in tow.
Also, one other bit of info. You'd think that by going to the smaller 16" wheel would compromise cornering ability, but surprisingly, it hasn't changed by any discernable amount. Geoff and I were discussing my usage of the "chicken strips" along the edge of the tyre one night and it was a bit of a mystery to him till I disclosed the fact that the 16" rim is 1/2" wider than the 17 incher which lets the tyre spread more and negates the effect of lower height by having greater width at these edges of the tread which evens things out when you crank the bike right over.

You haven't got a pic of both tyres end on, have you Geoff?

have been going thru some old pics and found these,
the difference of gearing between my 17 and Evs 16, both with brand new tyres for exact measures,,
you'll have to chime in with the rev change Ev

Hi Eddy,
I just pulled the 17 incher off mine so I took some pics to show where they are different. This is the first time I've taken a good look at all the bits. The caliper bracket is in fact the same on both wheels. Both have 2H7 cast in them. The difference is in the spacers and the caliper torque arm which has a more pronounced bend in it.

^ photo shows the two bracket types, Standard on the left. Note the thick spacer between the two parts on the Standard. The Special one has washers welded in place instead.

^ Here's the spacers that go between the wheel and the brake arm assembly. Std on left.

^Stuck both assemblies on an axle to show how they go together. Std on right. sorry.

^And snugged them up tightly

^Pic shows the difference in the bends on the torque arms.

^ Why the torque arms have different ends on them is beyond me. Std on left

Anyone with an RH handy want to have a look to see if they are the same as a Special setup?

Yes, Eddy. They will fit, but you have to use the matching brake caliper bracket as the disc is 8mm offset compared to the standard. Just a guess here, but I'd reckon the bracket from an RH will fit as they have the same spacing.

Has anyone fitted the US 16 inch rear wheel from a 79 special to a standard?

Will it fit straight on?

Cheers

Eddy
