these are the only 2 carb designs, Pete,s piccy back down a bit and Evs here, if you have pete's type, the needle must be bent because the plastic spacer supports, and stops the needle moving, with Ev's type the needle is free to move a little bit

both pics are in order of placement,, maybe you've got something vice-versa,
if you look closely at Pete's pic you can see the small dimple on the spacer, above the needle to the right, Ev's doesn't have a dimple

what model are the carbs off, for the least amount of confusing info

Ev's are the early std, while Pete's are a later RH

when you put the plastic retainer into the slide it sits down on the spacer on the needle.
I can't see in the pic if yours has the "pimple"

this is how Ev's came apart,
the locators on the long plastic aren't anything to do with the bottom of the needle, they locate into the slide only and hold the top of the needle, the needle and spring assy are a completely different entity

hey steptoe, check that long plastic retainer, on the bottom where it sits on the spacer on the needle is where the "pimple" is.
but any way have solved the problem, and I if I need to put it back it's easy, didn't shave off the "pimple" but put a small recess in the spacer, if need be I just turn the spacer over and its back on an angle.
If anyone has their carbys open would appreciate any feed back on this.

just pulled Ev's apart again to take a pic,, having hells own trouble with pic bucket atm

if you have things in this order when pulling it apart,,

circlip,, long plastic pin with a base with 2 locator nibs,, small plastic spacer,, groove clip,, flat washer,, spring,, you've got it the right way round

I wouldn't shave anything off the needle fitting plate,, you won't achieve anything

I do have the parts in the correct order but don't know if all the parts are correct as I have no background info on this bike, the carbs are from a '78-'79, I have the parts in order for that carb but maybe the spacer ring is not correct.
Anyone have a set of early carbs in pieces they can check the  spacer?

quick fix is to shave "pimple" off the retainer.

hi clutch,
i think u might have the order wrong with the parts of the needle,

heres a cpl of pics

if u have a close look at the needle, theres a small 'nipple'' on the plastic
piece.

which sits into the small hole next to the middle hole of the slide,

hope that helps.

have just gone in and pulled the top off Ev's spare set, there's no way to remedy it,, the way the spring assy sits on the bottom of the slide with no lower packing lets it lean off square,

there's a heap of load on the spring, if it was mine I'd maybe try drilling {same size as the needle} a little further {1 or 2mm} into the needle fitting plate, to stop the top of the needle moving around so much

maybe that's why on mine they changed the plastic spacer to sit under the clip and support the needle more

well I did look at both sides of that spacer for a hole but didn't see any, will look again.

pulled the slides again and checked again definately no dimple in the spacer that sits on the top of the needle.

major major wrongness,, the slide is supposed to run true out of the bottom of the slide, unsrew or unclip the top plate and drop the small spring, washer and needle out, there is a small locating dimple on the plastic plate inside that sits in a corresponding hole in the bottom of the slide,, second thought,, unscrew or unclip top, ,you'll be able to lightly push up and twist needle till you feel the dimple and hole line up and sit properly

what is happening presently situated like it is ,, the needle and hole are wearing in a pattern you don't want in a carby

I was wondering if anyone has take notice when o/hauling their carbs that the needle is positioned at a slight angle to the slide ( this is caused by a small "pimple" on the plastic tower that sits over the top) what I am asking is, does the needle angle forward or to the back? mine are angled forward and have been as you can see the discolouration on the plastic from the small hole forward of the needle.
