screw them out a full 2 to 2 1/2 turns  if the pilot jets are stock size,  with one size larger pilot jets the 1 1/4 turns is about right,  but as stock  the 1 1/4 setting is an EPA mandated lean as hell setting which means heaps of choke needed to start and takes ages for the engine to warm up and smooth out.

A richer than stock  idle circuit is way more practical than a miserly dry and lean setting which usually also gives a sputtering  backfire on shut throttle over-run.   with a slightly rich idle circuit you can jump on the bike cold and ride away without the slightest of hesitation.   After balancing the carbs,  you can just idle your bike for 2 or 3 minutes at a time and methodically remove and check the plugs until you're satisfied with what they're looking like.  A slightly sooty look after a few minutes of idling is ideal,  once up and riding the plugs instantly clear-up and run clean as a whistle.

Once they're looking good,  whip in another quick carb balance and you'll be home and hosed.   and in the absence of sync gauges you can set the butterfly sync by eye very accurately well within the tolerances needed for a good balance

Where are you Beemer? A few lads have the kit required to do the job really well if you live anywhere nearby.

Beemer, be aware that 1 1/4 is just a starting point. From there you want to:

1.balance your carbs with a good set of guages

2. adjust your pilot system by ear, or ideally with a colortune

3. re-balance your carbs

4. enjoy the ride.

Hi Guy's,

I'm putting new carb intake rubbers on and new new seat O rings, can anyone tell me what the idle mixture screws should be set at? I'm inclinded to think possibly one and a half turns out from seating? But if someone could give me a starting point I'd appreciate it?
The mixture screws I'm talking about are at the front top of the Carbies, to wind them in to seat them the turns varied, they were 3, 1, 2, 3 There is no mention in my manual on these?

Cheers

Lou
