Hey Brian,

I totally agree. I also have an RH and proudly agree that it is a very stable handling bike. I don't have the emulators or fork brace, just fresh 30wt fork oil (yes 30wt). I also own a 2008 Kwakka zx10 and don't get around corners any faster on that than the sweet old RH. Straight lines & open sweepers are a very, very diferent story but tight & twisty bits the XS11 wins hands down

That wasnt obvious in my pics, but I can see how it would make a difference.

I have always wondered what all the bad press about handling was about because since I put the emulators in my forks I'd go as far as say that the bike is very stable. I don't even have a fork brace.

Definitely looks like Yamaha acknowledged there was a problem and did a bit of work to improve things.

I've just found a good clear photo of the "extra cross tube" that I saw on Geoff's bike.

My Special's got nothing like that, or any of the gussets, nor has my '78 E model frame out the back

Brian, any chance of a pic of the rear subframe? I'm trying to find a good one of the rear end of my Special as it's like a Standard with the large rubber plugged holes in the side for the original indicator mounts ( which are damned handy for hanging racks 'n stuff off.) Can only find this one ATM but it'll give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Also, maybe I'm starting to lose it a little (not just my hair) but I could've sworn that Steptoe's RH had an extra cross tube in the vicinity of the fuel tank rear bolt / seat locating lug.

G,day Brian
Regarding the last pic.
what function do those do-hickeys perform?
You blokes and your late model whiz bangery.......youghta try n old school bike and see what motorcycling is all about :P

There's a hefty steel plate that bolts between them. Obviously they felt that a stong brace across those points would reduce flex.

As I said. I have the brace in place on my bike, so I can easily get dimensions if anyone wants them.

There's also the lower frame brace. You can see the mounting points here ....

I have one of these on my bike if anyone wants measurements. Usually they are lost forever when a 4-1 exhaust is put on the bike.

Some of you were interested in the additional bracing on the, far superior, RH model XS1100.

Here are a few pics of the bracing. Not sure how it compares to the rubber band framework on the wallowing standards, but my RH can out maneuver 125cc Aprillias on a go-kart track - so there.  :D

(truth is I ride like a grandma, so I can't tell you how the extra bracing affects handling)

Right-click "open image in new tab" if you want a better view of a particular image.
