Hey Steptoe
I originally was going to have a temporary bar (hoseclamped) but after a while I thought I may as well do a permanent since I had the TIG all set up

Below is the refrigerator option for those BYO everything rallies

a neat job all round, the gearsack fits on the base,,, but how do you hold it on with out the bar at the front,, with out an occy , or is there a box going on

the long mount bar will keep the bags off the bike too

and the satisfaction of doing it yourself ;D

All finished
6 point mounting, ugly but strong, you could hang the bike from the rafters off it, hmm maybe not

dug out the old gearsack for that retro look to go with the bike too.

you blokes have too much spare time ! I just picked up a ventura rack, a slight adjustment to the front mounts and some spacers to the rear mounts, bolts straight on, easier than fitting my old speed triple rack to my last xs.

Yeah thats what  I like about stainless, once you passivate the welds, rust doesnt really come into the equation.

Well the sticky tape and cable ties are off and the first tack welds are on.
As an extra precaution to protect the TCI unit from being zapped by stray ergs (you can look that electrical term up)I disconnected it, as well as the battery.

Hmm now for another beer .......dont wanna rush in and muck it all up ay.

Hey Melb,
Been a while since I tigged but should be ok with a few test welds first. If you can oxy weld, TIG should be OK once you get the feel for AMPs etc. They are very similar, controlling the weld pool and feeding the filler rod are similar technique.

Steptoe
Thanks mate

Ray
I got the bender from tradelink "Rigid" brand.

The rack has advanced to being held together with Kable ties now  :D

Where did you get the tube bender?
A, now departed, friend always made racks using 12mm galvanised electrical conduit.  Brazed the joints.  I've had a rack on mine, in the form of a combined gearsack & pannier frame, for 25 years or more.  The galvanised tube is super strong.

Now, to find a photo....
cheers

Keep us informed Jonesy. I've been wanting to start poking around with welding. Be interested to see how you go with TIG.

I'm making a luggage rack for the XS......hope to get some rally use next spring/summer.

Only early days so fa.r
Progress photo at this stage shows its held together with tape and its still at the stand back with a beer and see what needs to be done next stage.

Length of 13mm stainless tube = $40
good quality hand tube bender = $155
borrowed tig welder from mate = $0
satisfaction doing it yourself = priceless
