yes indeed - the benefit of less unsprung weight is "improved suspension compliance, as well as benefits (to) gyroscopics that affect handling and acceleration" to quote from the writeup on the latest Triumph Speed Triple on MCN......
Thats about 15% heavier I think....

Finally got some goss on the weights, Bryan. According to one of the lads on the Yank site, the straight spoke  front rim with bearing and inner bush weighs in at 6.22 kgs, which is substantially heavier than the swirly, and lighter is better, right?

Rear wheel - 7.6kg as is

I am interested to know the weights of the straight spoke wheels if anyone has bare rims in the shed

wheel weights??
looking at them side by side, the "swirly" will be heavier than the "straight", ???, why

they {the wheels}  are the same measurements all over, EXCEPT if you were to straighten the "swirl" spoke, it would be longer than the straight spoke,,more metal, more wieght,, ergo the "swirly" wheel would be a touch heavier

that;s with out having a set of scales  :-[

I'm leaning toward paint myself - the frame on my XS is powder coated - coming up to 10 years old - was great for abut 5 years but now some parts have discolored and there are a few chips now that are hard to repair - and anyhoo, how often do wheels get damaged by stone chips and the like.
Also, I have been quoted $200 a wheel to strip, p/coat black with polished rim and spoke edges... :o

AAAHHHHHHH......therein lies the question - Like you, I think lighter, but I wont know until
I have one of mine off and stripped down :-\
I am thinking that paint will be the thing...no need to remove the cush drive and all that....

Good to hear you're coming along ok, Bryan.
That's the age old argument regarding the wheels. To go with powdercoating that'll last for yonks, but is incredibly hard to prep for when trying to get the clean edges where the coating finishes and the polished bit starts, vs painting which is a hell of a lot easier but has limited lifespan.
Good thing you've got plenty of time to ponder on the choice.

Just curious, Bryan. Do you know if the swirly wheels are lighter than the old straight spokes? They certainly look like they would be.

OK - bit of an update - recovering well - not walking but "Forrest Gumping" these days  ;D
been having a bit of a tinker with my 1978 Kwaka....
out with the old and bent

in with the new and spiffy

the "itallic" wheels in the background....I can't decide between paint and powder coat (black in both cases with polished edges)
what do you all think??
