All fixed.  Was the short section of wires from behind headlight to front brake.  New wires and all good.  Now to get it inspected for rego, tomorrow.

Tried that originally and the light didnt come on.  Looks like, as you said trace the wires back and see where the problem is.  Thanks

Yes, so long as you have the right two wires, eg, if you turn the ignition on and touch the two pins together that I mentioned previously, your brake light should come on.

Thanks.  I take then the switch completes the loop - from power to brake light.  If I touch the two wires together, then with ignition on, should the brake light come on?

Normally, I'd suggest tracing the wires back from the brake switch to the closest join, unplugging both wires and testing for continuity with a multimeter. It sounds like you're having trouble with the first step though and I don't have my bike in front of me to provide more detail, so try this instead:

Take a couple of normal pins, gently poke them through the insulation so they make contact with the wire core of each of the two wires just behind the front brake switch. Use these as terminals to check continuity across the switch with a multimeter (or test lamp). You should have continuity when you pull the lever in.

Front brake connection to brake light

Hi all.  Fixed the taillight assembly and all good.  Took the RH to have inspected and failed on the above and rear shock oil leak (should have really washed it first).  I have shockers from the 78E so thats not a problem.  However the front brake not connecting to the brakelight is another matter.  I took the headlight out and found two wires, one, a brown one was not connected so I plugged it into the only other plug, being a double brown connector( no good).  The only other available slot was the earth.  Question : how do I check the front brake switch, as I am not sure where to start.
There is a little plunger at the head of the clutch lever where the two outlets are and I assume is spring loaded.  It clicks and freely goes in and out.  I put a wire from the second brown slot to the earth and it sparked so I am assuming I have power to the plug.
Thanks
Carsten
