and if the mixture screws dont fix it,
the float levels might be on the lean slide.

hi Pete, no mate just trying something to really fine tune the fuel/air mix,,

a shim split the size of the grooves,,

have run mine lean, but it does a lot of popping

The popping on deceleration you can usually dial out by tweaking the idle screws out a turn or so

with the needle on the mid spot.
ive got a little bit more fine tuning to do myself,

from memory i think it was  alan b from the uk site was able to get
half  shims when he fitted his suzuki  carbs to the xs.

hey steptoe,
why are u looking for a shim in between?
have you tried it with the needle on the leaner side?

Mine are in the second from the top, too. Running stock airbox, filter & pipes. No idea what jets are in there. It hasn't played up. so I haven't messed with it.

when i first got my bike with the stock air box the needle was
in the 2nd spot from the top, with stock jets.
i bought a dynojet kit over 12 months ago and was messing around with that for a while
but couldnt get it quite right,
so ive gone back to stock settings but with air pods the needle in the middle
position was way to rich so i put the needle back to the 2nd position and running
115 mains the bikes running the best it has in a while.

so was curious what you have ur needles set at, and have you messed around with
the positions?
