jumping out of 2nd gear is more common, but what you describe is also quite possible as the drive dogs which wear in the 2nd gear issue are also common to 5th gear

4 gear ghost neutral issue

Hi brains trust wondering if any one has had issues with the 4 gear ? The hydrolic clutch I installed had made a huge difference to gear shifting but it has made me very aware of the issue im having with my 4th gear, if I'm not really positive with engaging from 3rd to 4th (particularly) or 5th to 4th its very easy to get a false neutral.  I'm guessing this is the gear the bike has spent most time in as its the best for 60 to 80 km riding, Seems to be getting worse. The plan is to do a full bottom end and big bore rebuild this year and ill definatly be checking out what's going on in there then but thought I'd see if this is a common thing with the xs1100 orif it's lazy shifting on my part . Stay upright out there.
