My brother (a real mechanic unlike me) had a quick look. I had wired the starter solenoid incorrectly when putting it all back together. The ignition was only powered when starter was engaged.
Not so much a technical problem as a technician problem!

After a series of holdups with carburetors and ignition, I now can start it reliably but the minute I let the starter button off it stops running. It is not something to do with wiring in the button as directly powering the starter with a jumper lead has the same effect.
I rechecked the timing mark and TDC and it seem OK for the time being. It fires up OK.
Not sure what step to take next...
