Maybe its a home made setup for transferring fuel to or from a second tank?

Sorry Bryan...thought you meant the one in the fuel cap that dumps out the back near the rear mounting bolt.

Correct Bryan......never seen or heard of one that has the internal overflow as well. You ve rediscovered a relic there..........
I t will be interesting to find out the history behind it.....whether it be for racing or a prototype.
I can t think of a logical reason why it would be there....as the filler cap has a breather along with the normal overflow setup.

Normally the race refill units have a breather tube as the fuel is being dumped into the tank.

So to start the ball rolling......was it manufactered as such..........or has it been added at a later date..? (by some crazy German?).

Instead of being an overflow.......could it of been some way to vent fumes back into the tank?........ or to add pressure into the tank? (by some crazy German?).

You know they are still upset over losing the war...this may be some way of fecking with our minds........(just a wild guess ).

so you mean theese tanks have 2 overflows....right?
one under the cap to let rain water out and one inside the tank to let fuel out....
mine doesn't have the inside fuel only one

crank is rock solid...

I will try the stuff Xtian has mentioned to kill the rust in the tank - the overflow under the cap is blocked
haven't been able to clear it yet.
The tank has an internal overflow - none of the other tanks I have have that - do you guys?

first chance I've had to have a good look at the donar......
took out the plugs - No 3 jet black
took off the timing case cover - it wont turn over....
took off the cam cover - timing chain is intact
looks like PO's claim that the primary is at fault couls be on the money
this from inside the fuel tank

this is serious corrosion - i took off the paint with the air hose.....didn't see the fins disappear tho

this is some of the seat base.....

as Dale said tho - still a lot of good stuff there tho.... ;)
