Hey Shane. Here’s a thought. If you buy another 6 bikes likes you’rs for $200 a piece or enough spare parts, ie, dissambled bikes, to fill half of a container the shipping costs would be cheaper and the money you make when you sell off all those “ spare parts” it might nearly cover your repatriation costs! Just a thought mate, I know that others have done it.
Cheers. Happy new Year.

Yeah in a perfect would that'd be nice, but I had me one of those once in a life time deals. this one was sitting at a horders house under a tarp on that trailer for ages. Till on my daily commute to work the tarp had fallen off, I thought OMG look at that baby she is so farkin hot... and she's over 35 ;). That arvo after work I pulled in to ask expecting to be told no or fark off.. From time to time I've seen others on the likes of Craigeslist and in the pennypaper (50 mile radius) going for $600 up to a grand or so, real basket cases tho.

Happy New Year

Hey can one of u bastards tell me how my New Year is going to be. Seein u's get to it in before me  ;)

Cheers

Yeah Jeff,

Service and Installation Tech for a local mobility company. We install Overhead patient lift systems / Stairlift / Vertical platform lift , down to scooter repairs / bathroom assist bars. Basically we cover most things to do with residential mobility.
Coming Home Why, good question. When I was home last, it was for a fortnight during the end of Sep and begining Oct for mum's 80th. This time returning to the states told me its time, definitely was the hardest in yrs of visits back home. I have Grandmate I want time with before he gets into those his teen years. And I'm tired of one week vacation a year. Vacation doesnt accrue nor Sick time, don't use it, u use loose it.

And I'm tired of telling them I'm Australian, when they hear my accent and ask. I'm not a Pom / Scot or a Irishman... I'm a bloody Australian lol. After yrs that, I now tell them I'm from Sweden.

Shane...you ll find more than enough eager members on the forum wherever you land in Aus to help out. What work are you / were you doing in the Pacific north west and what prompts your return to Aus...if I may ask?
I agree with Eddy ...buy up whatever you need before your return and ship it all back with the bike.

Tassie for a start... I'm a Queenslander from the Mackay area. My billy lids moved down there to a few yrs ago, Im thinking of landing where my family base is for a start. I guess we'll see what happens after that, I'll polly end up back up there (friggin heat might kill my arse after living over here tho), or over to SA... bro and his mrs made noises about going there.

@ ya XSIIE,

Mate thnx for the info, great stuff. To be honest I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with how to go about the process, so it would end up with a smooth/er transition on the au end. You know I don't even think about spares, the only thing I did have in mind was bringing back a 750 diff. With that having been said I might need put list together of stuff, for future support of this old girl.
I picked this one up for $200 (the bloke was asking $400) with 32000 miles / clean title, she smokes bit out the left....  I guess I could dump more into parts to go, right.

Cheers

Shane

Hey XS Eleven,

A few years back (6 years) I researched buying a Midnight Special (LG) from the states and importing it to Australia.

I found the perfect bike. an LG with 5K miles in pristine condition, cost was US$3500. (AUD$5000)

After all the singing and dancing was done it was going to cost me around another AUD2000 to get it to Oz and then have it complianced for registration purposes $2000, and a right royal pain in the arse if I organised each step of the way.

The most efficient in terms of $$$$$ and **** around factor was to get an agent to handle the import from the drop off point in the US to the pick up at your port? in Oz (I was using Botany in Sydney) The agent knew all the hidden costs that I had no idea about.

Here's some links:

https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/

https://motorbikewriter.com/import-motorcycle/

http://www.bikesabroad.com.au/usaimports.html

The moral of the story is.... employ an agent to get the bike from the port of drop off to the point of pick up . that way you will know how much youy are up for up front.

Depending on the usage of your bike (daily ride  or toy) you have a couple of options.   Normal registration and the cost to get it complianced. I am unsure of the current costs. or club rego for 60 days usage per year and no compliance required. Club rego cost in NSW is an up front of $90 and then $45 per year after that.

If you are going to bring back spare parts. Buy them in the US and ship them with you to Oz.  Parts here are all but dried up, and most of us here buy from the US and ship here for less than it would cost to buy here.

Good  spares for your bike would be the 20 litre fuel tank (specific to US models) A set of carbs. (these are the most common problem for poor performance in this model) and if you can get hold of standard and original exhaust systems bring as many as you can carry as they are more rare than unicorn poo, and finally if you can get hold of fairing sets (seen them on ebay for $200) bring a spare set coz you cannot get them here.

Good luck on your adventure

Eddy

Are you doing a full nuts and bolts resto or just a tidy up?

Yeah the resto is going to take a bit longer than I originally banked on. Since I've decided to head home, so i have a few hoops to jump through with customs and what knot. Hey if there is anyone out there who has shipped stateside to Australia, and wouldn't mind the info sharing (ball park costs and things I might need to do so she doesnt get held up dock side). My thanks in advance.

And not forgetting the weather isnt that favorable for out in the shed at the moment.

Your pics you posted using Photobucket have disappeared....did you use the forums account or your own photobucket account.
If its an account you set up yourself with photobucket...you have to pay them $ 400.00 per year to be able to post to 3rd party sites. You can use "Imagur" for free...its a lot easier to use as well.
