I can do 45-48 MPG with my 78 Standard. It is Canadian gallons which are also Imperial gallons. I can repeat this finding over and over as long as I cruise at about 70 MPH and do not get on it at every stop. I used to get 50MPG when the bike was bone stock. I wonder why so many have mileage issues these days? More performance issues or other factors...Dunno
78E, 79SF currently running and road ready.

Hi Jonesy. good to hear you got the carbs sorted on old 00337. 50 mpg is great.....do you ride sedately...If you look back thru my records i'm sure I only got like 38 mpg?( I have to convert all this silly litres/ 100 km crap to mpg lol. Looking back at old records I kept when I had a 1981 GSX1100E in early 80's in NZ I noticed low of 42 and high of 65 mpg. But then the GSX weighed maybe 25-30 kg less and had the TSCC engine with 105 hp. ( I think the 65 was after I first got it and it scared me at first..Beats my last car which was a '77 XC Ford ute with 450 hp  Clevo 351; good for 9 mpg in town...Hope your keeping those rims shiney mate.

Did a  600+km ride over the weekend just gone, and got 328 km (digital trip meter verified with google maps) to reserve off a sidestand fill and topped up again with 18.3 litres. 17.92 km per litre or 50.6 mpg..........happy with that. Standard state of tune with MAC 4 into 2 exhaust, oh and spoked wheels :P ;D

Hey Chrisso,

On the new subject.

My 78E

XS1100 to 1196 with a Wiseco kit.

Substantial head work. (Cams, ported and polished)

Crank balanced etc.

Standard carbs with stage 2 carby kit (for a big bore, modified head and standard exhaust) (stages 1 - 4 available in kits)

Standard exhaust.

All this makes for smooth power throughout the range. (Bourke Rolling starts)

The power didn't just whack you it just kept pulling till I backed off.

I will bring it round when I come to visit.  (not this weekend as I have baby sitting duties)

There are pleanty of mods and twice as many "opinions" on what makes these things go fast (er). in the lower, middle and top ranges.

It all depends what and where you want faster to be.

Eddy

Ever had it Dyno'd ??

Big bore kit for sure. ( I'll Google Wiseco---or alteratives)

Chrisso, don't worry about doing a Google search for info. Just search on here and all your questions will be answered with a bit of a read, including the one about the valve saver crap.

Thanks Pete,
The RH is stock, the 78E has had all the work done.

I'll start using 91 in the RH.

Eddy

The XS has a low compression ratio. Mine runs happily on 91. Although I do fill up with 98 sometimes. Also I have to use the Valve Saver crap. I will not use Ethanol blend though. Im looking for the compression ratio--- which is fairly low.

Hey Chrisso,

I'm running the Dynojet stage 1 and 3 kit

http://www.dynojet.com/pdf/European/Yamaha/E4124.004.pdf

The blurb said this was for a bike with a big bore kit (mine is 1196 Wiseco)

Head work (ported and polished)

I'm not using pod filters, instead I have the standard airbox with a K & N filter, and a 4 into 1 pipe, I'm using a stock standard which I am more than happy with.

Hope to pop around next Sunday if you're free?

Well if I could choose, I'd be going for more mid range power. An XS1100 isnt and shouldn't be a top end screamer. I would leave the cams alone. Big bore kit for sure. ( I'll Google Wiseco---or alteratives). As for Carb kits---whats the deal there?? BTW im still running the standard air filter.. Pods would be good but i'd like to keep the chrome covers on the sides of the airbox. ??
Std Mikuni's are 34mm CV. Which are large compared to my old Z1000 which had 4 x 26mm. ( Strange that when when the earlier Z1 900's had 28mm carbs. ..Just throwing ideas around. Ive just pushed the bike out front ready to wash it and thats a struggle; dont think my legs quite ready to ride yet.  :(

I am getting about 16 kms/litre????
May have a bit of a fiddle as it seems to use more fuel idling than running.
