For some years now in South Africa we get LRP as well as unleaded, both 95 octane where I live at the coast. No other type of fuel is available at the pumps. I run all my old bikes on the LRP and the new ones on unleaded, allthough the XS1100 were designed to run on unleaded. I have had no complaints, fuel wise. We have a annual economy run, which I enter each year with one of the Yamaha's. I run in the two-up catagory with my teenage son, and compete in the 100km/h group. My blue (Speedblock E) XS turned in a 17,4km/l average in windy conditions year before last, and my macho maroon (Standard E) XS managed a 21,8km/l last year in perfect conditions, both runs on LRP.

Just got a question for everybody as my memory is a bit muddy when I try to go back as far as when we had standard and super at the pumps. Did the standard actually have lead in it cos I vaguely remember that the old Valiants (like our XS's) were designed to run on the stuff.
Regarding the metho, I was told that it's capable of absorbing it's own weight in water so you wouldn't normally need to put much in the tank at all.

:)  here in the uk we had all these fuel problems when they removed the leaded gas from sale and gave us the LRP that never seemed to work as good . the two stroke idea sounds feasable. you are right that the powers that be are doing there best to remove old machines to recycing centres and everybody to ride a dayglo blimp so they know who ya are !! over here we have just had one of there worst green ideas actully past . and put into practice and that was the scrappage scheme. all dealers ( cars that is , thank god! ) gave an incentive to scrap ya car by giving you £ 2000 off a new car  and ya car goes to the government for scrapping. result is airfields and where houses are full of old classic cars ready to be crushed , ya cant even buy a bit of trim off them , they have to be crushed to remain green and stop enthusiasts from doing there cars and keeping them running.. a world gone mad!! >:(  its a crying shame !! but on your fuel prob il ask on our uk site and see if our gurus miti.mick,tom,brian.etc can throw any ideas  at ya .. respect spanner.   8).

I personally do, unleaded with every second tank I pour some{ maybe a litre } 2/stroke fuel into the bottom before refueling,,

the lead in the fuel used to put a cushioning layer between the valve seat & face, and lube the valve stems,

 that's why I use the 2 stroke

all "valve saver" is, is 2 stroke oil with a different name & an over the top price{ for the amount you pay for} to go with it,, most  people don't know this & that's the way they want to keep it

Not having ridden an XS for quite a while I take it you guys use straight unleaded without the lead replacement?
