I'm agreeing with PGNZ here.(about the syncing by eye not about the Goobers).  I had exactly the same problem.  it was the butterfly settings.  once I wound back #3 I was able to balance the remainder without high ordering my newly rebuilt donk.

Good luck

As per Jonesey's suggestions, pay particular attention to where the cable outer fits into the bracket at the front of the carb bank. That's about what mine was revving at with the cable not seated in its holder properly.

I with Errol sounds like cable not located properly  :(

Thanks for the help.

I'll pull the carbs off and recheck everything. Has anyone got photos of how the fuel lines and vacuum lines run. Just need to cover all bases.

I've been riding Yamahas since 1976. Only other bike was a Honda CB900F 1978.
last bike ridden XS1100RH 83 1995 sold the bike to fund an O/S trip. Have a XS1100E for 12 yrs and ready to restore.

bench synch the carbs so that you can just get a fag paper under the butterfly valve, a mm or 2 is too much.
is cable holding throttle open because its pulled tight by wrong cable route? even though it opens and closes freely. Idle adjust backed right off? are all 4 main needle clips in the middle groove?

As much help as possible required!!!

78E Pulled the carbs apart, sprayed cleaner everywhere. Pulled the diaphragm apart and found number 1 carb the jet needle I pushed up as the other 3 I pulled the jet needles down. Reversed the spring on number 1 and now the jet needle pulls down. Put everything back together making sure the the rubber boots seals. Bench synced the carbs as best as i could. Installed back on the bike, twist the throttle to make sure nothing was jamming. Hit the starter button and bike fires up but revs at 7000rpm, Push the choke in, no change, screw the idle adjustment knob, no change. Just revs it's guts out.

Where do i start to find the problem????
