If that was the case Jonesy I would think the springs would measure slightly different but they seem spot on the same.

you must have got a matched pair of +/- 2.5/0 mm springs?

pretty much 3 choices, old agricultural damper-rods,
emulators with drilled-out damper rods, and cartridge forks,
the emulators smooth any jarring on bumps,

they bounce open at pre-set tension on fast compression and flood out the oil in one big woosh, way smoother than a few tiny holes will ever
be, the cartridge type are a free-sliding plunger and a flexy
layer of discs/shims the oil passes thru that make it all way smoother again,

don't have to be upside-down forks, these vfr forks are still cartridge type, slick-as ride if set properly with
  matched springs

and some 87'fzr750 forks, damper type but with drilled-out holes with emulators and straight-rate srings

those  fzr forks they're 42mm thick
and solid, fork brace seals deal on non-flex
with radial 120 17'' wheel.
axle end screws into fork rather than clamp,
but axle's hollow and pretty thin 15mm..
the skinny discs are floating and mere 3.5mm thickness and 320mm dia, xs11's fixed about 8mm and 300, the blackspots primo brakes, compact light one-piece, powerful-as with 14mm cylinder, soft metzeler tyres stick like glue

Hey Scarfy, I hadn't seen them explained like that before, interesting. I had looked into them before but I think if I upgrade the front forks I will just go straight to a hyabusa front. Cost won't be much more for a lot more gain.

Well if you ever pull the forks apart in the meantime Eddie can you check the length of the springs.
I haven't found any non xs1100 parts yet :)

I can recommend installing emulators in your forks. Gold Valves or something similar. I put them in my old K100 BMW, along with a refurbed rear shock and they transformed the handling.

Won't be pulling the Police bike down for some time yet Bretto.

It is earmarked for a project for me and the lad ......... When he's ready to pick up the wrenches.

A question to ponder............

Since Dusty is made up of so many bits from different bikes..........

Are you sure that your springs are not from another non XS1100 type bike............

reckon there'd be a tolerance on that 503.5 free length that could cover your 506mm

damper forks you don't get miracles the 4 compression stroke damping holes are too small so
stiffer springs will only mean a harsher ride and if you drill them
any wider she'll she just bounce pogo-stick style

Police bike specs, front forks
« Reply #1 on: March 16, 2016, 05:45:21 PM »
The police bike forks have beefed up front springs. The Spring free length for the E,F,G models is 503.5mm the special is 612mm.
My springs are 506mm
I would think as they get older they would collapse not grow so considering the bitsa my bike is and having some police parts it has me wondering.
Could these be the beefed up police springs/forks?
Do we have any specs for the police forks?
