OK, After going over all possibilities and replacing the ignition switch (which didn't have positive on/off locations and broken mounting bosses in the plastic housing ....$42 on Ebay), The problem was a dead cell in the battery...so thanks Eddy and Lou...all good and starting like a dream.

Hi Eddy, To be honest I haven't had enough time to go through things as have been away on leave for a couple of weeks....just had time to get things apart really, starter solenoid I checked and OK...will be away for work next weekend so may not be until end July before I can get to it. Thanks for the follow up...will let you know how I go...One thing I did notice when I did get power to the instruments is the headlight isn't working but taillight does...when I hit starter button everything dies.

I would nt totally rule out a faulty battery . You can carry out a simple load test by connecting a voltmeter and observe the voltage whilst temporarily connecting the headlight with some spare wire to the battery and check the voltage remains fairly stable over a period of time or starts to lower.
Do you have a spare ignition switch to change over? Also check continuity on all neg connection from battery terminal to frame and engine straps and at reg/rec unit.
Check also the clutch switch together with the "starting cct cutoff relay".

How starts the more difficult stuff.

Easy checks:

connections on the Black Box and Regulator Rectifier.

use a multi meter and check the Black Box and Regulator, any of the service manuals tell you what to check and the which readings you will need to confirm all is good.

Check your ignition switchis not cutting out.

After that i'm lost and seek the help of an auto electrician.

fingers crossed it's an easy fix.

Hey Lou,
Unfortunately I am sad to say that the reliable RH was the one that let me down.

Bladeson is the code word for "blades on" the fuse box.

Hey Alice.

had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago.

I tried new plugs, charging the battery , checking wires and then I cleaned the bladeson the fuze box and that fixed it.

A simple and easy thing to check.

Hope this helps

Eddy
Hey Eddy What's a bladeson is that only on the Standard and not the reliable RH? I hope my bike has one or two bladeson?

Cheers

Lou

Hi, My XS1100 had been running fine until last week....I arrived home from work stopped the bike before putting it away only to find that when I turned the key to start it again....absolutely nothing...no ignition lights! Now I checked the battery and its OK...so it was charged when I got home. I then turned the key to on and left it for a while...came back 3-4mins later and ignition lights were on...hit the starter button and everything died again. I did notice a click coming from under the seat or side cover when I hit the starter....not sure were from... Any suggestions please...Thanks, Alice
