making the tap as a manual "off" will still mean the o-ring's not sealing properly

using up the gas in the carb bowls,  start engine, slip vac hoses off the taps , that's "off"

Yep thanks for that, understand now the mod doesn't eliminate a faulty o ring...
Cheers....

Thanks for the info guys, put new neddle valves in the carbs recently when put the set of Mukuni BS36's on. Just started to leak, just enough to piss you off.. >:(
Will have a look at the taps and will probably be doing the mod.
Good idea too if leaving bike unused for awhile as it permits running carbs to empty as well.

the seal is the rubber o-ring on the plunger, the spring pushing it firm gets weak, you  polish the plunger and o-ring and stretch the spring, mine's got springs from a ballpoint pen, all sweet no leaks  (different if gaskets are tatty and thin) or if rubber disc is dodgy, (tweak/bend the wavy washer for more sideways push) would have to be pretty shlthouse petrol to be like that though, usually the plunger

Well, Tim's,
I went down the path of new float valves and seats plus replacing the fuel tap kits and it didn't stop my bike having fuel leaks. The thing that did cure it was to modify the taps to have an off position. Simply file off the little knob on the face plate where "Pri" "Res" & "On" is written, this allows the tap handle to go right round to point straight up and cuts off all the internal ports of the tap so no fuel flows at all. Literally a 10 min job once the tank is run down low and removed from the bike, tip the tank up so the taps are high and dry then unscrew the 2 little philips head screws holding the plate then file off the knobby bit.
