well, the green wire being disconnected doesn't stop starter motor from cranking,  the green wire connection just shoves 12v through the tci to the coils when starter motor is cranking,  disconnects when starter button is released,  the connection not even needed if ballast resistor is by-passed,, `problem must've been the rusty fusebox....

In response to this request I received a message from Jeff in Melbourne inviting me to ring him to see if he could help.so we started with the usual ,I guess, checks like fuses and starter solenoid and we found there was a wire disconnected,I had seen this green wire before but couldn't see a corresponding plug for it but turned out it went into a red/yellow wire,go figure, also all the fuses were rusted so replaced them and bingo the motor would turn over but wouldn't start, there was not any spark at the plug when cranking but 2 seconds after stopping cranking there was a single spark, next was to check the ballast which had been taped fairly heavily so to disconnect it and join together the two wires out of the loom and presto a spark appeared, put the plug back in and started cranking with help from start ya bastard and it eventually fired up and ran very rough but eventually smoothed out with a few pop and groans,so now it is promised to a guy to buy,I would like to thank Jeff for his help over the phone and to others who offered help on this forum, cheers Nev

I was going to suggest the same as Eddy. I had a similar issue as you so I did a test on the ballast resistor (1.6 ohms if I remember correctly: thanks guys) and it seemed alright. You can try removing it entirely. I also had to bypass the kill switch by using a 2 inch piece of wire and putting it between the 2 red/white wires underneath the tank on the right hand side hand control connector.

Otherwise starter switch, starter, bad connections or the fuse box. Check the power on both sides of the fuses in the fuse box.

I had a similar problem when rebuilding 3131.  I had lights and power just would not kick ove .  I shorted the startes solenoid with a scre driver to by pass the starte button .  This worked. then whatever black magic goes on in electrics it just worked properly from then on.

??????????

Good luck

if dead as a duck at the starter button with not even a clicking solenoid,  try earth strap connection from frame to engine,  main fuse might cause it but lights still on dash who TF knows but at least the main fuse is easy to check

Hi all, just put the old bike back together after a long time out of action and cannot get the motor to fire,I have lights and oil light and neutral light but when I press the starter button I have nothing at all, kill switch is on  to go ,some of the wiring had been disconnected but all back together now, anyone have any clues as to where I can try,is there any main fuses that would cause this?cheers Nev
