Ras, this was actually my second option for doing this job. I was going to use a paint pen for the gold, but there were none to be had here in town, and I didn't feel like a 120 klm round trip to get one.
Paint used was just rattle can acrylic.
It'll be interesting to see how long the finish lasts, but at least, they've got some protection from the sun now.

Xtian, it makes a pretty good job for days when you're hiding in the aircon from the heat outside. (well, the sanding and finishing bit anyway)

First off, nice job.
I have tried everything from gold paint pens to gold leaf. I never had much success with them as they either did not work out (gold leaf) or they faded (paint pens with clear coat). I also had problems with the paint I used as it would seem to bubble a bit when applied to the original finish.
Second I want to ask if you used an enamel type paint or laquer or plain old Rustoleum type paint? I will be interested to see how you make out with it as in, fading or peeling.
I think I will try this on a few of mine if yours work out as well as hoped.

Actually had a couple of Beams, as there was a bit of weather happening after i got it finished. Say out on the upstairs verandah for a while to watch the light show. Wasn't too bad! It was all noise, though. Hardly got the ground wet despite it hanging overhead for about 2 hours.

P.S. you've got good eyes, mate. It's  been a while since anything could be reflected off the paintwork and actually read!!
Must have something to do with this little bottle of purple stuff I've been playing with recently, eh?

Here's how i went about refreshing my sad looking sidecover emblems. Over many years of riding, all the gold "plating" had vanished from the lettering. Looking back through some old photos tonight and I can see where Neriel's calves would be resting against the sidecovers, and probably squeezing them when negotiating twisy bits, or after hitting a big bump etc. We did a lot of miles together over some very " not prepared to racetrack quality" roads, so I guess I've answered the question of how the plating has come off the emblems. For those that don't carry a pillion often, this shouldn't be a job you should need to do.

^ The photo that started this

^ Removed sidecovers and carefully pried off the little clips by getting my fingernails under the raised clip flanges and lifting from that point. Didn't want to risk snapping off any of the plastic mounting posts so extreme care was used here.

^ 34 years of grime hidden under the badges (yes, I gave them a good wash while they were exposed)

^ after a quick scrub, the badges were given a few coats of metallic gold paint and left to dry.

^ next up, a couple of coats of matt black then put out into the sun to make sure they dried completely

^ Then using some 600 grit paper, carefully sanded back the black to reveal the gold underneath. At this point, I could've put them straight back on the bike as they looked damned good!

^ I wanted the finish to last a while though, so I gave them a couple of coats of clear to seal the colour in.

^ at the moment, they're a bit too glossy, but I think that'll settle down in time.

^ But they look heaps better than they did yesterday!

^ I'm happy with the end result.
