Also the bastard at the RTA in Darwin made me cut the powder coating off the frame number and ID plate (with a stanley knife that he gratiuosly supplied), so that the blind bastard could read it without his specs on.

Checking for altered engine & frame nos was part of my previous employment.  We used acetone & steel wool.  Cutting the paint off with an edged implement - we'd get them with the surfaced hacked at with a screw driver or a file sometimes - stuffed the surface, made numbers harder to read etc etc.  Quite a number of restored bikes & cars go through this process.  Sometimes I enjoyed taking the paint off, to upset a shit bag owne.  Other times, I'd do everything I could not to touch it.

Next problem was almost invariable that a new number had to be stamped in.  It allowed teh vahicle to be registered but did nothing for it's value.
cheers

Just to add got frame powder coated (was at business when checked for replies to post)
Had to do a lot of extras the Guy failed to tell me to tape up areas and put bolts in all threaded holes that are not to be painted .
So I had to sand triple clamp stem and holes for forks + shocky mounts, and run a tap through all threaded holes What a pain.. :( but all good now it's done
 :D
Ps my department of transport lady could just read the chassis number( she had her glasses on)

Hi John,, have also been down both tracks,, will go the paint again  myself,  yes you get the finish with  coating  but over a long period of time (motors in and out)  painting is easier to deal with

I'll never go the powder coat road again. Can't match the finish if you damage it, looks loke crap if you try.

Also the bastard at the RTA in Darwin made me cut the powder coating off the frame number and ID plate (with a stanley knife that he gratiuosly supplied), so that the blind bastard could read it without his specs on.

You paint the frame so it will not rust......
If paint chips just sand it back and paint over if powder coating chips bad luck you fill the hole with paint

Hey Hen,

I've done both the powder coat and the spray options on two different bikes.

Sandblast frame and swing arm cost was around the $100 mark.  They can prime the frame for you at an additional cost. in hind sight I would get the priming done by the sandblasters if i am going the paint option.

Powdercoating was around the $150 mark.  Well worth the finish, however It is a apin to read the frame number and if you chip the powdercoating I found it near on impossible to "fix" well.

Spray the frame with automotive satin black acrylic lacquer.  Cost around $50 for the paint (pressure packs) finish was as good as new. chips easy to fix.

Triple clamp lower was painted with the upper being polished.

Cheers

Eddy

Hi John

I was advised by Mal Pitman to sand blast and have all the frame etc painted with 2 pack gloss black.  It has come up a treat and it looks great.  I went to a local bloke who doesn't really specialise in this sort of work, he is more on-site industrial stuff, but as he is a bike rider like us, (Triumph 1700cc twin, not a classic like ours I know) he did the job for $300 as a favour.

I hope this helps with your decision.

Cheers
