Like you said, Ken. It's all down to presonal preference. When I bought my old girl, it had a new set of Duro's on it which felt ok for about 10,000 k's then went south pretty quickly.
I got a pair of Bridgestone Spitfire 11R'S fitted and got 20,000 k's out of them before replacement was due. I was really impressed with the grip, both wet and dry, plus they give quite an audible warning when they're getting loaded up while cornering. (Yes, they howl, but not a bad thing - You know they're working)
When my new wife started coming along with me, wear changed to about 15 rear, 19 front and stayed the same with the addition of the keg.
Currently logged over 260,000 k's with these tyres on my 11 and have no inclination to want to change brands. I haven't had any flats (touch wood) and have really been a great all round tyre for me. Whether playing in the twisties, or doing endurance runs outback, they've never let me down.
Pricewise, I don't know if I was getting a sweetheart deal cos of my position in the Ulysses Club at the time, but I was getting the tyres for $200 a pair fitted and balanced from MTM motorcycles at Geebung, Brisbane, though I've moved north now and they're a bit dearer up here.
Might be worth a phone call, though. Ask for Peter and tell 'em Errol sent ya!
BTW, Pressures I run are 28 front, 40 rear. That suits the weight of the bike best, I feel.
