Thanks Eddy.  Any help will be appreciated.
I've only got the old photos, which will get me in the ball park but not 'just right'.

You might just make a template from a sheet of paper, or flexible cardboard.  Tape it over the fuel cap insert & mark that, then mark the corners of the badge.  I'll tape it on mine, so the tank cap lines up and then I can position the badges correctly.
I did that for my RD sidecovers and, 20 years later when they went on, the paper I used was just the same.  Just need to make sure you use a couple of standard points, that you'll find on any tank, sidecover etc.

I reckon I'd cut the stems off and use double sided tape, in preference to the drill.

The website reckons that they are slightly smaller than original.  Not a drama except the rear badge does have two posts, so I may have to use tape on that badge also.

We'll see.

Hey Ray,

Bike looks great.  Inspiring.

I bought a set of  Badge replica 1.1 and they seem Ok but are cast from metal and require you to drill 2 holes into the side cover and then put on spring nuts.  They do look good damn though.

I have an original tank with a badge on so I'll get the measurements and post them on this tread in a couple of days, Ditto for the side cover.

Cheers

Now that Oz Post has finally delivered my bits (18 days from Albury to Wagga!), I've got brand spankers tank badges to go on, plus I have new internals for my fuel taps.

Suprising thing was the genuine tank badges were about the same cost as the replicas. So genuine it was.

Has anyone bought the 'Badge Replica' badges?   I've got to get back to work first (been off for 6 weeks) but I will need the sidecover '1.1' and tailpiece 'Yamaha' replicas, as genuine ones aren't available.

And what about a template for the correct location of the tank and sidecover badges?  Anyone out there got one, or has the badges in the original location and could quickly fashion one from cardboard?  Please?

cheers

That's a neat looking paint job Ray!

Looks like mine now - not too many going around in this colour.  I just fitted a replacement seat cover I found on the UK eBay site, after much searching.  Very happy with the end result.  It's pretty close to the original but, funnily enough, it was a touch shorter and wider than my cover - still went on okay with a bit of care and the help of my 80-year-old next-door neighbour who happens to be a retired upholsterer...handy!

Looking forward to seeing more pics.

Cheers,

Edgey

Shore looks purty, Ray.

I'd love to be there when you go to put the badges on it. That'll be a very delicate operation, and scary, I'll bet!

Funny how the gold stripe looks yellow.  Must've taken too much 'highlight' out when I edited it.

Looks bloody fantastic.
$100 for the tank and seat trim to be stripped.
About 5 or 6 hours with a random orbit sander & hand sanding to get the plastic parts to bare, with attention to smoothness of the surface.
$1120 (16 hours) to repair the tank and prime all of the parts.
$1100 (16 hrs) to spray, mask, spray, mask, spray to the finish.
And the paint cost $250, too.

Too much for a 30+ year old bike?  Who cares. It's just another thing that floats my boat.

then...3 hours of very careful juggling to re-assemble it.  No scratches. ;D

It doesn't have fuel in it yet.  I hope the taps don't leak. ???

Seat needs urgent attention now.  The seat base is very hows-your-father.  The seat cover has more tears in it than a US investment banker at a shredder.
And badges.  All my badges have lost their gold.

It's done!

To the best of the combined ability of the painter and I, to get it as near to oem as possible, it's done.

 :D

I've even paid for it 8)
