Thanks Fred        The proof is in the pudding
I was speaking of the beemer as I havent got the yamaha going yet.
As I would rather spend time changing oil than parts, I will take that advice and change my service intervals to 5000.

Mate, revel in your new found knowledge.

Knowledge is Power and this applies to horsepower as well.

I can't work out if you're changing your oil every 10,000klm on the Beemer or the XS?

If it's the XS I would strongly reccommend that you at least halve the service interval and in fact I change my oils every 3,000klm and filter every second oil change.

My beast has clocked up over 368,000klm with only one rebuild.

Just a thought mate.

I thought I was close about two years ago.
I have the new shims so keen to get them in. Have been off the road for a month as I snapped the monoshock on the pogo stick. Rooting around with these valves has a benefit as the beemer has the same setup. As I have not touched the motor and its up to 120kkms I am going to adjust the valves in it using my new found knowledge. I change the oil and filters each 10kkm.
Am also looking for a set of vac gauges as I want to learn how to do this carby balance act.

Update - Have put a new valve in, lapped it and tested the seal.
Am buying some shims to get the clearances correct and then back together it goes.
Aiming for the Rally now.

g,day , as far as I,m aware, all models,, but only the original standard size pistons,

unless they make the same incremental over size rings as well,

a quick search should tell you whats avaialable
Ok I have been searching like a newborn looking for a teet. I have yet to find out why the ford focus rings may fit. I am sure there is many variables to encounter as we are half a world apart and many of the vehicles you guys have...we do not. Question is how and why would a 2 litre engine fit a 1.1 litre engine?
Went to my local parts supplier and he says that fords to Aus would be different than here. How so and how do I put my hands on said rings?
Here it is offered a 1 thou over for standard ring replacement as well as in 10 thou increments from that.
From what I can find the ford focus is 84.8mm and my  parts engine is about 71 mm.
Why the difference and if so how would it possibly fit? Just looking for options here.
78E, 79SF currently running and road ready.
1 more in the wings patiently waiting with a big bore kit already installed.

Have got the valve out and its slightly wonky but no marks on the valve face or piston.
Would be interested in a straight one, its 31mm diameter x 95long  using the tape measure. How do I match the seat angle if I get a different valve?

Got the head off yesterday without removing the engine. It was 42 C and then we got a thunderstorm complete with hail which was surreal. The number 3 exhaust valve has about .8mm equal daylight around it so not seating. As we had new plugs in it I could tell that it was running at the start. Am looking up the valve removal tool and will get it out. Will be looking for a valve if anyone knows a source and also shims which we will redo now that we have it on the slab.
Its forecast to be above 40C here for next three days, better keep the liquids up.

With regard to the exhaust valve, we kicked it over to close the valve , removed the header pipe and put fuel in the exhaust port which we observed to drain into the pot. This was after we got a flat zero reading from the compression gauge. The other cylinders from memory were about 105psi.

Cant argue with that, definitely sounds bent to me

Dont forget to tie a long piece of string to the cam chain..........its a real pain in the arse if you drop it into the sump and have to go fishing to get it back

Thanks Jonesy - If I dont need to remove the engine to remove the head then Im in. I was wondering about it but did not think there was sufficient clearance.  With regard to the exhaust valve, we kicked it over to close the valve , removed the header pipe and put fuel in the exhaust port which we observed to drain into the pot. This was after we got a flat zero reading from the compression gauge. The other cylinders from memory were about 105psi.
I spent a lot of time closing up the airbox so am reasonably confident that its good, that why I dont want to remove it as has been "professionally" taped and silasticized. Remember this is not a show bike. When I plugged the vacuum lines it was able to idle but was running rough and only on three pots by this stage. Thats why I assumed it was the vacuum lines causing it to over rev.
So Im going to attempt to remove the head without removing the engine. I might do it during the club AGM on the 21st, that way I can get loads of uniformed advice and free character assessments during the procedure. Will advise
