15l tank looks much better though.  ;)

I think the bigger tank fits straight on, so look out for a spare on EBay.

mates......mine goes best on bp ultimate....i guess the high compression makes a difference
I too have the large tank but dont pay much attention to economy - I know that around town its pretty poor economy and at high speed it crap also, in the extended twisty stuff where i'm holding 3rd a bit its also not real good.......
but i like it! ;D

Run mine on standard unleaded... read from Yamaha manual that they were designed to run on standard fuel not super. Lot of discussion on this on the U.S site as well, nearly all run on straight unleaded... unless your Steptoe and have the magic formula for mixing with Acetone  8)  :P My tank is a little bigger as well, around 20-22 litres....and yes I still have a spare, Step  ;D

Ah thanks mate:)
Little disappointed to find my XS only has a tiny 15 litre tank where as my dads 79' model has a 22 litre tank.. Dam Yamaha designers. Why go backwards?

Hey Coopz,
all engines before 1986 need to use a lead substitute (I prefer to use Valvemaster myself but that is personal choice) unless they have had their valve seats upgraded.
I would suggest this is not cost effective unless you need to pull it down anyway, like a rebuild perhaps.
XS1100s were tuned to run on standard fuel(89 - 91 ron), Premium fuel does not have any lead in it either and I have found no benefit in using it. Your bike will not run any further or faster on it and it burns at the same temperature so it will not keep your heads/pots any cleaner but it will make it harder to start on cold mornings.
Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the stylish fast lane.

About to take order of my 81 model, just wondering do they run ok on premium (95-98) fuel or do they still need that Nulon Lead engine oil treatment?
